There’s no doubt that the Mets are suffering because of Jose Reyes. But what does Jose have to do in order to help the team?

Here are three things that Jose Reyes needs to do to help the New York Mets.

HIT BETTER

Almost every player in baseball is a better hitter than Reyes, in almost every way. If he wants to succeed anywhere, he needs to be a better hitter.

Entering Wednesday’s game, Reyes was hitting a terrible .149. Even the DFA’d Hanley Ramirez was hitting more than one hundred points higher.

So far this season, he’s had three stretches of six or more games without getting a hit. He doesn’t get on base at all really as his OBP stood at just a bit over .200.

In the power department, there’s nothing there either. One home run all season and in 43 games, he’s driven in a run in just two games.  When you look at both average and power, even Chris Davis is having a better season than Reyes.

If Reyes can raise his average by 50 points, he would still be in a very dark place, but would be a start and the only thing stopping him from certain doom.

PLAY BETTER DEFENSE

So far, this is looking to be Reyes’ worst defensive season ever. In 2007, Reyes committed 12 errors over the course of more than 1400 defensive innings.  This season Reyes has already committed six errors and he hasn’t even played 140 innings yet.

If he played the whole season, he would be on pace for more than 50 errors. He’s committed two errors at each position he’s played in, third, short, and second.

At shortstop is where he has his best fielding percentage. It stands at just .909, which is bad. As the second baseman, Reyes made two errors in three chances.

BE RELEASED

What better way to help the team than by saying goodbye? If he goes and literally anyone else takes his spot, the team might be better off. Even if the Mets signed Ramirez and tried to slide him into the positions, Ramirez would still be a better player.

Whether the Mets bring someone new up to replace Reyes or they sign someone else, results would be seen and help the team in both the short term and in the future.
