Mets might want to think about moving Asdrubal Cabrera to Diamondbacks
By Richard Heaton
The Mets time with Asdrubal Cabrera might soon be coming to a close. Maybe the Arizona Diamondbacks could take a stab at landing him for the remainder of the season.
The New York Mets have had Asdrubal Cabrera for three seasons now and he’s only getting older. He’s still a solid hitter, but the odds that he will contribute to the Mets past this season are shrinking.
Maybe it’s time to think about flipping Cabrera for some prospects. One team that comes to mind that could benefit from Cabrera is the Diamondbacks.
Right now, the Diamondbacks main second baseman is Ketel Marte, who hasn’t been doing all that great lately.

In fact, so far 2018 is the worst season of his career in many areas. He began June with a five game hitting streak, but his average is still the lowest that it’s ever been.
His best skill is his speed, in which he is one of the best triples hitters in baseball. But he has not been getting on base enough for the Diamondbacks, who were one of the best teams in baseball earlier this season.
They started the season on an incredible tear, like the Mets, and have started to fall apart, like the Mets.
They looked like they would easily be one of the teams in contention, and if they want to stay like that, they could use the help of Asdrubal Cabrera at second base.
The Diamondbacks are no stranger to dealing away prospects for established players. A few days ago, they traded away Elvis Luciano and Gabe Speier for Jon Jay.
The Diamondbacks shouldn’t stop there. Cabrera has a higher average and a lot more power than Marte and can really help the team during the final few months of the season.
Who to trade for?
One player that the Mets could go after is Yoan Lopez. He is a reliever who spent this season with the Diamondbacks Double A team. This season he owns an ERA just below 4 and a K/9 rate around 12.
Last season his ERA was below 1, but that was one really good season after a few seasons with an ERA above 4.
In the future, Lopez would be a good piece for the Mets to use in the bullpen.
One of their best pitchers in Double A is Taylor Widener, who could also be involved. 2018 is his first year with the Diamondbacks after being with the Yankees for three seasons. Through roughly a dozen starts, he has kept his ERA just below 3.
Last season his ERA stood at 3.39. Like Lopez, Widener would make for another great pitching prospect in the Mets organization.
One hitting prospect the Mets could go after just might solve their catching woes. In Single A, the Diamondbacks have a catcher by the name of Dominic Miroglio. He has been a fantastic hitter last season and so far this season.
According to MLB Pipeline, the Diamondbacks two best catching prospects are Daulton Varsho and Andy Yerzy. Last season, Miroglio hit .317 in rookie ball with some power. So far this season his average is about the same, with a slight increase in power.
Having a catcher like Miroglio may work wonders for the Mets in two or three years when he would be hitting the big leagues.

If the Mets could flip Cabrera and get something that revolves around one of these three players, the future of the team might be a small percentage better than what it’s looking like now.
