New York Mets: Wilmer Flores walk-off home run wins the series

The New York Mets’ nine-game winning streak came to an end over the weekend at Citi Field when the Milwaukee Brewers came to town. However, the Mets would not go down without a fight. In fact, they would hardly go down at all.

In a series that was not as easily won as the others, Wilmer Flores wins it for the Mets in walk-off fashion in game three. Before he did, the Mets experienced some highs and lows.

Here are some offensive highlights:

Game 1- Friday, April 13, 2018

Todd Frazier finally hit his first home run in orange and blue. Not only did he hit one home run, he hit two in as many at-bats to help the Mets take game 1 from the Brewers.

Frazier collected 3 RBI’s in game 1, along with an RBI each from Yoenis Cespedes, Jay Bruce, and Adrian Gonzalez.

Game 2- Saturday, April 14, 2018

The Mets dropped game 2, losing only their second game of the year. The only offensive life that appeared in game two was a bloop single into right by Cespedes, which scored Michael Conforto.

The Mets would end their winning streak, falling 5-1 to the Brewers.

Game 3- Sunday, April 15, 2018

The Mets jumped to an early lead in the first on a single by Frazier, scoring a scorching hot Brandon Nimmo, who got his first start after returning to the team.

Speaking of the scorching hot Nimmo, he would homer to tie the game at 2 in the 6th. This was Nimmo’s first home run of the year.

It is going to be hard to keep Nimmo out of the lineup. I’m curious to see how Mickey Callaway will handle the outfield situation going forward.

The game was tied at 2 going into the 9th. Jeurys Familia kept the game tied, bringing up the Mets bats in the bottom of the 9th.

With two out and nobody on, Wilmer Flores and his FRIENDS theme song approached home plate.

Guess what happens next.

That’s right! Flores won the game for New York in the bottom of the 9th with his second home run of the year.

The Mets won the rubber game of the series, 3-2, sending the Brewers on their way with a series loss.

Not only did Flores hit a walk-off home run to win the game, but he hit that walk-off home run off of a right-handed pitcher. I’m sorry, what?

Personally, I would like to see Flores playing over Gonzalez. There has been some controversy over the first base position for the Mets, but that has seemed to settle a bit since Gonzalez has gotten some big hits.

It is obvious that Gonzalez is a better defender at the position, but I think with enough time, Flores could get excel defensively as well. As they say, these things tend to work themselves out. Callaway has made himself clear- the best player will play.

To put a bow on things, the Brewer’s fought hard and ended the Mets winning streak, but the Mets fought harder and won the series. That is 5 consecutive series wins to start the season, the most in franchise history.
