An early suitor for Jacob deGrom emerges from the American League basement
It’s not New York Mets rumors season but already those teams out of playoff contention are looking to fix the issues which plagued them in 2022. One of the teams that didn’t accomplish what they set out to do were the Texas Rangers. Despite spending big in the offseason, they came up well short of expectations.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, it’s the Rangers who could join the series of Mets rumors we expect to see this offseason involving star pitcher Jacob deGrom. If there’s one thing the Rangers were missing this season, it was definitely an ace like him.
Could it be that the “other” team in Texas is able to sweep deGrom off his feet and sign the already-a-Mets-legend to a big deal?
Mets rumors: Everything is bigger in Texas and the Jacob deGrom contract offer might be, too
Every Mets fan expects Steve Cohen to open up his wallet and direct his front office to make deGrom the best offer possible. Rangers fans may soon feel the same way. After adding Corey Seager and Marcus Semien to help give the offense some credibility, the next phase of their rebuild could be to add a player like deGrom.
Fortunately for Mets fans, someone like Clayton Kershaw might be a better match for them. The Texas native may even prefer to land in his hometown state if the Los Angeles Dodgers let him walk away. deGrom, a Florida native, is only geographically at risk of joining the Atlanta Braves due to their closer proximity to the Sunshine State.
Mets rumors involving deGrom haven’t gone beyond speculation at this point. It was known before the year even began that he’d opt out of his deal. Now only a few starts back from the IL, the conversation to talk about an extension will have to wait. They’ve got a pennant to win.
There aren’t all that many alternative options for the Mets to consider as obvious deGrom replacements. It’s not as much about a lack of available talent but far more about how great he is, has been, and should remain.
