Conflicting NY Mets rumors: One calls curtains, another accepts an encore

Two insiders. One door shut. One left open.

Knowing who to believe isn’t always a case of favoring one messenger over the other. Usually when it comes to different New York Mets rumors, there’s an intention behind all of the leaks but also some speculation as to what certain writers may believe in their hearts.

Take these two conflicting Mets rumors as an example. Deesha Thosar believes the Mets are done making significant moves. Anthony DiComo sees a way in which Framber Valdez could be a possibility on a short deal.

So which is it? The third option seems to be what would make the most sense.

Framber Valdez to the Mets seems unlikely, a different significant addition is different

Valdez’s pesky qualifying offer penalties are a major turn-off, especially with the fact that the Mets have already signed Bo Bichette. Losing two more draft picks is the kind of bold move only the Los Angeles Dodgers would take, doing so by taking Edwin Diaz and Kyle Tucker this offseason. Just because the Dodgers are doing it doesn’t mean you should. It’s a kind of trap into flattering them with imitation.

The Mets have yet to subtract anyone from their rotation which points at Thosar’s point about being done with significant moves. Does she mean additions? She doesn’t believe they’re necessarily complete. Define significant. Is David Peterson for Jeremiah Estrada not it?

That’s the troubling part of the Mets offseason. They’re either close to downloading their 2026 roster or we’re about to get a longer step. Remember back in the Windows 95 days when you’d see something still had 30 hours left and then suddenly it drops to under an hour? The unpredictable nature of the Mets this winter has two insiders believing opposite next steps.

As for DiComo, his conclusion is a fair one and surely based on some sense of reality. I still find it farfetched that they’d give up the two draft picks to rent Valdez for a year or two. The same goes for Zac Gallen.

Something significant is still possible for the Mets, but it’s those mid-level moves or slightly above/below we should expect. Another outfielder or infielder for the bench, a high-leverage bullpen arm, or even an additional starting pitcher all make sense.
