The New York Mets must upgrade their pitching staff and the first base position this offseason. While the Mets will be active in free agency, they could also explore the trade market in order to fill all of their holes.
So, we're going to take a look at three potential trade fits for the Mets, who were identified to FanSided by league sources.
Three Mets trade targets to keep an eye on
Trevor Megill RP
Milwaukee Brewers World Series champion closer Trevor Megill is going into his final year of arbitration in 2027 and could be dealt this winter. The Mets already have his brother, Tylor Megill, who is returning from Tommy John surgery this year. What's one more Megill on the roster? The Mets would be forming a strong 1-2 punch in the back of their bullpen with Trevor Megill and Devin Williams. And if Williams falters as the closer again, Megill could slide into that role and bump Williams to setup man. Megill has 60 saves across the past two seasons and recorded the final out in the World Series in October for the Brewers.
Mackenzie Gore SP
Texas Rangers left-handed starting pitcher Mackenzie Gore is also entering his final year of arbitration and makes sense as a trade candidate this offseason. It would be the second straight year that Gore was traded after the Washington Nationals dealt him to the Rangers for five prospects last winter. The Mets should be hunting at the top of the starting pitching market, but Gore would be a nice fit to round out their rotation as a second addition. Gore, 27, was an All-Star for the Nationals in 2025, but had a disastrous second half. Last season, the southpaw went 8-11 with a 4.58 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 3.87 FIP, 174 strikeouts and a 1.0 bWAR in 34 starts.
Spencer Torkelson 1B
The Mets were linked to Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson in the 2024-2025 offseason when Pete Alonso was a free agent for the first time. The Mets ultimately brought back Alonso for one more year, but were unable to properly replace him last season after he departed for the Baltimore Orioles. Torkelson has two more years of arbitration remaining, so he would be more than just a one year rental option at first base. Torkelson would bring more slug to the position, which the Mets desperately need after losing Alonso's power. The 27-year-old has hit a total of 57 homers the last two seasons combined, and would be a cheap option to solve the Mets' first base issue in 2027 and 2028. Torkelson's right-handed bat could also be platooned with the lefty hitting Jared Young.
