These players won't go from Mets rumors to Mets reality.

If he’s available and has talent, you’re probably going to see some New York Mets rumors about him. The MLB offseason is underway and you’ll find A.I. generated images made by your favorite and least favorite fans on social media trying to justify every type of move possible.

We know the obvious ones like Tarik Skubal. The needs for the Mets are no secret and unless there are some moving parts we can’t predict, it’s pretty standard on what the Mets will or won’t do with a few detours expected along the way.

These potential free agent matches for the Mets have at least one major reason why they won’t be wearing blue and orange at the start of the 2027 season.

Why we shouldn’t expect these free agents to sign with the Mets

Ty France isn’t going to sign with the Mets with their current first base situation

The Mets have first base options even if they aren’t incredibly desirable. We all have some 2026 Mets fatigue where the ongoing storyline of how they could possibly let Pete Alonso walk is continually thrown in our face. Ty France, coming off of a monster year with the San Diego Padres, is routinely mentioned as a Mets option.

True. He does fit what they need. However, convincing him to join with Jared Young already on the roster might have him think twice even if the Mets are overpaying him, which they shouldn’t. France is already 32 and if the Mets were scared off of how Alonso was going to regress, can they really justify going in this direction? This is a .686 OPS hitter from 2023-2025. His 2026 success was an outlier.

Adrian Morejon is going to get more money and a bigger role somewhere else

It would be extra expensive for the Mets to sign Adrian Morejon due to the qualifying offer penalties they'd endure for doing so. New York would lose their fourth and fifth-highest draft picks plus an additional $1 million in international bonus slot money. As improved as it would be to have him in the closer’s role over Devin Williams, it just doesn’t seem to represent how they’ve attempted to operate. This club needs to invest in a top starting pitcher, not another high-priced reliever who could help reset the market. On top of that, Morejon might even land a gig where he becomes a starting pitcher.

The time to sign a player like Morejon would have been as an Edwin Diaz replacement/alternative. The timing wasn’t right and now the Mets feel a little stuck where they’re at with the bullpen. It’s already feeling likely they will at some point have Williams, Sean Manaea, and Kodai Senga in the relief corps. That’s a lot of money for three guys we’re having trouble trusting.

Jake Bauers makes even less sense for the Mets than Ty France

If you’re bearish on the Mets signing France, you need to upscale to whatever the largest type of Ursidae there is on the planet. Make one up if you must. Jake Bauers is what the Mets are hopeful Jared Young can more closely replicate. While Bauers showed in 2026 he is far better, he has a much thinner resume than France and lacks the necessary defensive skills the team will desire at the position.

Only The Athletic’s Jim Bowden seems to want to try to connect Bauers to the Mets. His track record makes France look like a perennial All-Star. Bauers can be really good for someone’s team in 2027 and beyond. It won’t, shouldn’t, nor will it be the Mets. On top of everything, Bauers getting a qualifying offer should disqualify him from even being in the conversation.
