Will the Mets get more out of 2025 Sean Manaea than they did out of the 2024 version?
The last big acquisition in the rotation was really a reunion. Many thought after a successful 2024 campaign that Manaea would price himself out of what the Mets were willing to pay for pitching, however, in somewhat of a surprise given the hot pitching market, he returns to Flushing on a three-year $75 million deal.
The veteran southpaw became the Mets' de-facto ace last season, logging 181.2 innings and racking up 9.1 K/9 while pitching to a 3.47 ERA. In many ways, 2024 was not only a bounce-back year, but it was also the best of his career.
While it would seem that replacing Manaea with... Manaea would be a lateral move, there's reason to believe year two could be even better. For one, he clearly enjoyed his time with the Mets and found a groove with Hefner who should continue to help him reach new heights in 2025 and beyond.
Secondly, Manaea's mid-season arm slot adjustment clearly unlocked another level in his performance. A full season of him utilizing the Chris Sale-like arm angle could lead to even better results in 2025.
While it might not seem like much, not only was retaining Manaea a necessity, it's a move that has the potential to bring even more value in 2025 than it did in 2024.
Verdict: An upgrade, even if just a slight one.
