2) Griffin Canning
The Mets picked up Griffin Canning on a one-year deal this past offseason and the right-hander looked like the heist of the winter. Canning owned a 3.23 ERA, 4.03 FIP, and 1.40 WHIP across his first 11 starts/53 frames. Although his 21.8% K% was only roughly league average, and his 10.9% walk rate wasn't eye-opening, he cut his HR/9 down from 1.60 over the last two seasons with the LA Angels to only 1.02. Griffin was inducing far more ground balls, with a 52.6% GB%, compared to just 41.5% during his final two years with the Halos.
But Canning's four starts in June should have some fans worried. He has allowed 13 earned runs in just 20.1 innings of work. He allowed his 13th earned run this season on May 17. While the right-hander has only allowed two home runs, he has also allowed ten opponents to reach via free pass and has struck out 17. Canning's ERA went from under 3.50 to now 3.91 on the year.
Canning struggling now is horrible timing. Tylor Megill got off to a poor start in June as well before hitting the IL with an elbow sprain. Kodai Senga is also now on the IL. If Canning is going to start reverting back to his pre-2025 self, the Mets may have to start searching the trade market for rotation help unless they feel that Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas are enough to make up for the current hit their rotation is taking.
