New York Mets fans were driven to madness this week by the losses of Edwin Díaz and Pete Alonso in back-to-back days. The two departures came on the heels of Brandon Nimmo's exit via trade, and with the Mets' biggest moves so far being subtractions, fans are desperately wondering if president of baseball operations David Stearns actually wields a method to this madness.
Some of the sport's most respected pundits are wondering the same thing. New York Post's Jon Heyman appeared on MLB Network on Thursday and essentially wondered aloud what on Earth Stearns is doing. Heyman went as far as to say that even a Tarik Skubal trade might not make up for the yucky start to New York's offseason.
Jon Heyman says the Mets need to salvage what's been a messy offseason, perhaps by trading for Tarik Skubal
“To me, they were an 83-win team [last year]. On paper right now, they look like a 70-win team.” - @JonHeyman

"To change the narrative, you better go get Skubal," Heyman said. "And I'm not even sure that really makes up for it, and I don't know if that makes sense for the Mets."
Heyman went on to explain the dangers of Stearns giving up a handful of the Mets' top prospects (not named Nolan McLean) in exchange for one year of Skubal. He also characterized the Mets as a "70-win team" right now on paper. Yikes. The worst part of Heyman's schpeel for Mets fans was that it contained zero lies.
On the bright side, it's still mid-December, not mid-January. Stearns has time to right the ship in Queens, even if -- as Heyman pointed out -- doing so will require a transaction or two of gargantuan, franchise-altering proportions. If Skubal alone wouldn't do it (a jarring consideration), perhaps Skubal and Fernando Tatis Jr. would make Mets fans smile upon Stearns once more. ESPN's Paul Hembekides mentioned both superstars in connection to the Mets on Thursday.
So the New York Mets won 83 games, reportedly aren’t interested in long term deals with starting pitching, lost Edwin Diaz replacing him with Devin Williams, lost Pete Alonso without an offer, and Lindor/Soto don’t get along?

Franchise is having a Dallas Mavericks off-season
Unless Stearns has already locked in some blockbuster moves for January, he's dug himself a deep, dark hole with Mets fans, the likes of which has only been outdone in recent sports history by NBA GM/villain Nico Harrison, who was recently axed by the Dallas Mavericks for trading Luka Dončić and alienating the franchise's entire fan base.
Stearns can still avoid a Harrison fate. If he miraculously flips this entire narrative and has the Mets looking loaded entering Opening Day 2026, Stearns will have not only surprised us all, but proven that he's got a lot of courage for being able to withstand the current storm. Are a pair of mammoth acquisitions truly on the way for Stearns and the Mets? If so, they can't come soon enough.
