The bad, the good, and the indifferent with the Mets.

When the New York Mets have won lately, it feels ugly. Not so much on Wednesday night against the Kansas City Royals. The 6-2 victory had a beautiful 5-run 8th inning.

Not a comeback but a late foot on the gas instead, most games have reminders of why we do stick around. A.J. Ewing leading off with a home run, Christian Scott pitching one of his better games, and the farm system ranking after the team sells off all provide butterflies in the tummy.

It may be a lost year in the standings, but there’s a lot to still care about.

Tobias Myers isn’t doing what the Mets need him to

Upon his big league return, Andy Green spoke about what he wants to see from Tobias Myers. Finishing at-bats was the goal and unfortunately, he wasn’t as precise in that department.

The Mets still won in spite of this specific goal not being achieved by Myers. Quietly one of the team’s most disappointing players this year simply because he had all of the tools to be a fancy starter/reliever hybrid, Myers can be considered the cherry on top of a Mets offseason that failed to evolve as planned.

Brett Baty is trying to make a believer out of everyone

Brett Baty has a hit in every game he has played this month with his ongoing 8-game hitting streak officially beginning on the final day of June. You’d never know it unless you were paying attention because his batting average has only gone from .208 to .218.

Most of the games have included only one hit with the latest coming in one of the clutchest moments.

Baty didn’t offer any clear explanation as to why he’s doing better lately.

"My pregame work is really good right now. Trying to just clear my head and trying to hit balls hard," Baty said. "I’ve always been good at that. And the first part of this year, I was terrible at it. Just trying to hit balls hard again."

Whatever works! The front office is still buying into him and he’ll attempt to finish the year strong to prove them correct for their continued faith.

Dan Hammer time is about to begin

The Mets will be calling up Dan Hammer for Thursday’s finale. After having barely any pitchers available on Tuesday, they asked their two most recently promoted arms to combine for 3 more innings, Myers and Xzavion Curry.

The 28-year-old from Philadelphia has a 1.77 ERA in 20.1 innings in Triple-A. Why wasn’t he up earlier? A frightening 7.5 BB/9 rate has made the Mets every bit timid about a promotion.

Hammer is yet another high strikeout, high walk pitcher from the Mets system. Not fully grown there, he came over as a minor league free agent this offseason. We’ll have fun with the puns until he walks the bases loaded.
