NY Mets minor leaguer with wild stats, wilder celebrations added to the 40-man roster

This is the kind of fun we have to look forward to.

On an off-day for the New York Mets, the team decided it was time to make a 40-man roster change. No one was shuffled out and even with the addition to the roster, it guarantees nothing more than protecting themselves against a potential opt-out. They’ve added Jefry Yan to the active roster while immediately reassigning him back to Syracuse where he has helped compile some of the wildest numbers you’ll find.

In Syracuse and Binghamton this year, Yan has pitched to a 3.78 ERA. That’s pretty standard, acceptable, and enticing.

Crazier are the walk and strikeout totals. He’s at 6.5 BB/9 which is on-par for him. With it comes a dastardly 17 K/9 through 33.1 innings. Mastering his control has been something no coach in the Dominican Republic, Japan, or America has been able to help him improve.

If nothing else, Jefry Yan will be must-see TV for the Mets later this year

You might remember Yan from the preseason when his March 3rd celebration caused a bit of a stir. Celebrating so wildly in a preseason game, it wasn’t an Edwin Diaz situation where we had to worry all that much about losing a missing piece for an entire year. That fluke injury from Diaz in the WBC ahead of the 2023 season is incomparable to a lifetime minor leaguer standing out because he brings energy to the field.

The Mets have been criticized plenty for lacking identity and personality. It was one of the things Pedro Martinez called out about this year’s squad. Yan’s influence should be minimal. A lifetime 4.61 ERA in the minor leagues with control problems, there’s a chance we never see him at all this year. More realistically, he’s someone the Mets summon past the trade deadline for a closer look to examine if he has anything to contribute moving forward.

Certain players will grab headlines with their performance. Yan seems bound to do it with a fiery presence on the mound and over-the-top celebration. There hasn’t been much to celebrate with the Mets this year. Yan, when he achieves his first MLB strikeout, will give us something to cheer, enjoy, and talk about.

What I want to know is if Keith Hernandez has fun with it or huffs because this is what the season has come down to. It'll probably depend on how the rest of his week has gone.
