1 reason Francisco Alvarez's NY Mets lineup statement will be true, 1 reason it won't

“I think we are the best lineup in the whole baseball.” Francisco Alvarez came into Port St. Lucie swinging, telling SNY in an interview that he believes the New York Mets have the best lineup in the league.

Could this happen? Absolutely, and whether it does or does not I love the confidence from the 23-year-old. A big part of that would be Alvarez getting back to the player that hit 25 home runs in 2023.

FanGraphs backs Alvarez’s statement. The baseball stats and analysis site projects the Mets lineup will provide 33.33 Wins Above Replacement in 2025.

That is just behind the Orioles who are projected to have a 33.4 WAR. The Dodgers, Yankees and Braves follow in that order. Juan Soto has the highest WAR projections in right field and Francisco Lindor is second at shortstop behind Bobby Witt Jr. The site also believes Mark Vientos will have a big season in his first full year in the show and Brandon Nimmo will rebound nicely this summer. Yes, if all of that is correct there is no doubt the lineup Carlos Mendoza writes out will be one of, if not the best lineup is the league.

The Mets lineup has a ton of potential but it’s not the best lineup in baseball.

At least it is not the best lineup, yet. Adding Juan Soto to a team that scored the seventh most runs in MLB last year is a huge addition but even just the National League has some of the deepest lineups we’ve seen in years.

The Dodgers who finished first in slugging percentage, second in runs scored and led the NL in home runs, bring back their entire World Series championship lineup. The Braves, who were devastated by injuries in 2024, will have a healthy Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley and eventually Ronald Acuna Jr.

The Philles lineup is identical to last year after averaging the third most runs scored per game. Don’t sleep on a Diamondbacks team that led the entire league in runs, was second in team batting average and added Josh Naylor after losing Christian Walker.

With the nine guys that David Stearns put together, the Mets have the chance to be up there with the best of the best this summer, but the rest of these teams have already proved just how lethal they can be. The Mets now have to do the same to be talked about in the same category.
