It’s all over for the New York Mets. The ride has ended. The curtain has been pulled. The hearse driver is staring at his watch and reminding you he has dinner plans.
October will drag on Mets fans who assumed there’d be playoff baseball of some kind. Instead, we got 162 games and a deadlock for a playoff spot in the very end. The team lacked the kind of heart we figured would remain from 2024.
One of the first decisions for the Mets to consider is which of their free agents should return and who isn't even a viable candidate to come back. With multiple players set to hit the open market, only four feel worth any thought whatsoever.
1) Pete Alonso
There is a lot the Mets can do to shake up the core of the team. Letting Pete Alonso go shouldn’t be a hasty decision. Should he be back? Probably. A proven slugger capable of changing any game with one swing, the team will have a tough time replacing his middle of the order power from the right side.
We’ve been through an Alonso free agency experience before. Just last winter, we had to wait until mid-February before a reunion took place. Prepared for Mark Vientos to potentially man the position for the bulk of the innings, both sides caved and decided they needed to continue the relationship.
The Mets need to make major changes and the easiest to do is to let Alonso walk away. Here’s the problem: how do you replace him? There isn’t an obvious free agent who fits the bill. While there are powerful options out there, that missing right-handed power will need to come from someone. Alonso wasn’t what cost the Mets. It was their pitching.
