Changes are coming for the New York Mets roster this offseason. Free agency is where focus begins first.

MLB free agency has a whole lot of phases. After the World Series, the free agent period officially begins with players on expiring contracts released and free to sign elsewhere. Included in the batch are those with player or team options. Later on, we get to the point where players are non-tendered which often brings a crop of several more quality players available to sign.

Before we get there, let’s take note of whose future with the Mets is up in the air with free agency looming.

Player Options

Pete Alonso
Edwin Diaz
Frankie Montas
A.J. Minter

Frankie Montas and A.J. Minter’s season ending injuries make them mortal locks to pick up the player options for 2026. Meanwhile, Pete Alonso is going to do the exact opposite and re-enter free agency. Edwin Diaz is undecided. Would a team really pay him more than the $18.5 million on the books for 2026? More of a restructuring and lengthening of his contract is probably the most advantageous for both sides.

Team Options

Brooks Raley
Drew Smith

More clear cut is what the Mets are bound to do with the pair of team option players. Brooks Raley successfully returned from Tommy John surgery and should be back next year. Drew Smith will try to replicate Raley’s success. Signed this year to rehab in 2025 for a 2026 return, the only way the Mets are bailing on him is if there have been some major setbacks.

Unrestricted Free Agents

Starling Marte
Cedric Mullins
Ryan Helsley
Jesse Winker
Gregory Soto
Tyler Rogers
Ryne Stanek
Griffin Canning

This is the largest crop of free agents. No one is a candidate to receive a qualifying offer. And if you ask most fans, it wouldn’t be so bad if all of them walked. A minor case could be made to keep a few of these guys. Griffin Canning was pretty good until he got hurt. Starling Marte, on a much lower contract and strict platoon role at DH where he faces only lefties can work, but why not open up the spot more as a half-day for the regulars? Tyler Rogers had his moments with the Mets. However, it’s probably best to explore some other options before rushing to re-sign him.
