NY Mets first-round pick is understandably ignored as an upcoming top 100 prospect

It won't be long before he'll be right up there with the rest of the sport's top names.

This offseason, the Mets have traded away a few important names like Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat. Despite tumbling in the farm system rankings as a result, the Mets still have a respectable system. In MLB Pipeline's preseason list of Top 100 prospects for 2026, they had four names, three of which were in the Top 50.

The list has the who's who of young talent from around the league including several names from the first round of the 2025 draft. A few players lifted their stock after getting a head start on their professional careers, finding success in the lower levels of the minor leagues immediately after being drafted but not everyone is destined to have such a quick ascent to the top.

Mitch Voit did not make the 2026 preseason list of Top 100 prospects

Mitch Voit was taken by the Mets with the 38th overall pick in the 2025 draft out of the University of Michigan where he had a strong career, posting a .962 OPS over 741 college plate appearances. Scouts evaluated him as a well-rounded hitter with plus speed and a good arm thanks to his pitching experience.

He made 99 plate appearances with Single-A St. Lucie, culminating in an 89 wRC+. It's not bad for what amounts to a brief taste of professional baseball but it's hardly enough to warrant making a list that contains players of various ages and experience levels.

Nonetheless, there were some encouraging aspects to his short stint in Single-A. He had a 13.1% walk rate and stole 20 bases, making the most out of his strongest tool. In addition to playing his primary position of second base, the Mets also had him taking some reps at shortstop and he even played a game at third base.

An area of improvement that stands out from this small sample is his power, or lack thereof. He was reported as having the potential to hit 15-20 homers per season but he managed an ISO of just .059 last year. As he ascends the minor league ranks, he'll have to make the necessary adjustments to hit the ball with authority even as the opposing pitching improves.

It's important to note that with limited data, these prospect lists are subject to opinion and often change as the players get more minor league work. Fellow Mets prospect A.J. Ewing is a great example of the discrepancy that can happen towards the lower half of the rankings. Voit has yet to play a full professional season and if he puts up strong numbers in the first few months of 2026, he could appear on the list as the top names begin to graduate.

If not, he's still just 21 years old and has several years to put the pieces together before he and the Mets will have to start considering alternative options. New York has had a busy offseason building up their big league roster but that doesn't mean they've neglected the future of the franchise. It may take a few years to bear fruit but the organization is already sowing the seeds they'll need for the years to come.
