3) Brenton Doyle

This is an easier pass. Late Mets rumors on Day 3 of the MLB Winter Meetings said the Amazins were one of the teams buzzing around Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle. A Gold Glove winner in 2023 and 2024, he took a bit of a step back last season but not so much so there’s any concern about him being a liability in the outfield.

Doyle’s issue is he isn’t a good enough hitter. His road numbers away from Coors Field barely have him hitting above .200. How would that translate into half his games at a place like Citi Field? The Mets might be lucky to see him get to the Mendoza Line.

There’s good power, speed, and defense plus a cheap contract. There are things to like about Doyle. The problem is he isn’t enough of an improvement of Taylor. The same rules apply for him as they do for Diaz and Robert. Assets should be used elsewhere and the priority doesn’t need to be in center field at the moment. Grab a good defensive left fielder who might be able to assist in center field as a last resort instead. Pick up Doyle and we might have another Jose Siri or Cedric Mullins situation. Haven’t we suffered enough? Go big or stick with what you have and build around it.
