A swift defender with a questionable bat, the Mets have someone on their radar.

We’ve kind of ignored center field for the New York Mets these past few days. Losing Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso in less than 30 hours will have you forgetting they have other positions they’d like to upgrade. According to Ari Alexander of 7NewsBoston, the Mets are one of several teams with interest in Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle.

A two-time Gold Glove winner in three tries, he took a defensive step back last year. Inconsistent offensive numbers in his three seasons, we always have to be concerned about any kind of inflation that comes with playing at Coors Field. The Mets would likely treat him as a glove-first option in center field, putting him in a position to take over the bulk of the work and move Tyrone Taylor where he belongs onto the bench; unless of course Taylor outplays him and we have another scenario like in 2024 with Harrison Bader.

The Mets are interested in Brenton Doyle and maybe they shouldn’t be

About those road numbers. A .201 batting average away from Coors Field, we immediately see he meets the stereotype many Rockies players do.

Doyle is more powerful than Taylor has been and has been arguably a better defender. It’s definitely an upgrade. The weird thing about it is he’s entering his first year of arbitration eligibility with a $3 million salary as the projection. It’s $600K less than the Mets agreed to pay Taylor.

The salary difference doesn’t necessarily negate Doyle from the team’s plans. Francisco Alvarez has been getting paid less than every other MLB catcher due to having less experience.

Realistic yet underwhelming, the Rockies don’t have much incentive to deal away Doyle just yet because of his low salary. We’d have to expect for a position like center field, a player like Doyle would probably cost more than he’s worth. With so many other teams interested as well, the Mets might be better off just sticking with Taylor who isn’t all that much different. Left field is the far larger priority at the moment. Their next move needs to splash us from the Atlantic into the Pacific.
