Ever since Steve Cohen bought the New York Mets in 2020, the one thing he's continued to preach is sustain success. To be a team that year in and year out makes the playoffs and contends for a World Series. Essentially, he wanted to replicate the Dodgers' approach. A team that is willing to spend in free agency, but the core of the team is developed in the farm system and comes to the majors and makes an immediate impact.
On Tuesday, the Mets took a big step towards that goal when ESPN Insider Kiley McDaniel ranked the Mets' farm system as the best in baseball. McDaniels cited the talent the Mets have in the upper levels of their system. Guys like Carson Benge, Jonah Tong, and Jett Williams, who are all in Double and Triple-A. However, the Mets have a ton of talented players outside the top levels of the farm system. In fact, three prospects will keep the Mets system at the top of the rankings.
Jacob Reimer, AJ Ewing, and Elian Pena will keep the system as one of the best in baseball
Jacob Reimer, AJ Ewing, and Elian Pena have all generated a lot of buzz during the 2025 season. All three of them started the 2024 season outside the top ten prospects, but through their stellar performance this past season, have all entered the top ten. Once the guys in front of them graduate to the majors, they will all become top-five prospects.
The reason you don't hear about these three as much is that the bigger names in the system overshadow them. But they all bring something unique to the table. Reimer has been praised for his ability to hit for both contact and power. Ewing is a speedster who can become the perfect leadoff hitter. Even at such a young age, Pena has been described as having excellent plate discipline.
All three of these prospects can be replacements for current Mets players. Reimer can play both corner infield spots and could be a long-term replacement for Pete Alonso. Ewing is set to be ready for 2028, just as Jeff McNeil's contract is set to expire. Similarly, Pena is expected to be ready in 2030, but given his age, it might take an additional year or two. That would put him on track to be ready just as Francisco Lindor's contract is set to expire.
It's not a crazy idea to expect these three prospects to replace key members of the current Mets roster. This is what Cohen meant by developing a core from within. Instead of having to spend in free agency to replace these core pieces, they can promote from within. This will allow the Mets to allocate that money to other areas of the team and prevent the Mets from facing some of the harsher luxury tax penalties.
Of course, these three aren't the only prospects who will keep the Mets' farm system high up in the rankings. Guys like Mitch Voit and Will Watson will also get a lot of hype as they progress through the system. However, the future stars of the Mets' farm system will be Reimer, Ewing, and Pena.
