The 2025 regular season wasn’t the only disappointing thing for the New York Mets this season. They had plenty of prospects who came up well short of their expectations. Sure, there were plenty of positives to discuss regarding the farm system, but the Mets had a handful of prospects whose 2025 encore to a promising 2024 season was a massive letdown, leaving fans who followed the Mets’ prospects dissatisfied.

1) Boston Baro

Boston Baro was an eighth-round pick by the Mets in 2023 out of high school and immediately made himself look like a draft steal. In 84 games and 370 plate appearances at A-Ball St. Lucie, Baro hit .288/.368/.399 with a .367 wOBA, and 118 wRC+. He only went yard four times with a .111 isolated slugging percentage, but he also had an 11.1% walk rate and 17.8% K%. While Baro struggled when he got promoted to High-A Brooklyn, it was only for 11 games.

Unfortunately, those struggles persisted for the entire 2025 season. Baro turned in just a .224/.282/.321 triple-slash over 433 PA’s. His already low ISO fell below .100 to .097. Baro’s walk rate, which was a strength in 2024, became a weakness, falling to 7.2%. Even his strikeout rate moved in the wrong direction to 20.3%. His final wOBA and wRC+ on the year came in at just .286 and 85, respectively.

Baro may have gone 28-for-30 in stolen base attempts, but his baserunning value was held back by his lack of getting on base to begin with. His OBP was the eighth-worst among all qualified High-A batters. Only 14 batters had both a sub-.100 ISO and .300 OBP over 400 plate appearances across all minor league levels.

Baro may have been an eighth-round pick, but how he performed to begin his career gave hope that the Mets pulled off a heist in the 2023 draft. Not all hope is lost, as 2026 is only Baro’s age-21 season. But he needs to figure out how to take more walks again and collect more hits. There are some shades of A.J. Ewing here, who struggled in 2024, then went on to put up an OBP just over .400, and swipe 70 bags.
