To say that the 2025 season hasn’t gone the way New York Mets fans had hoped would be an understatement. After expecting to be one of the best teams in baseball, they sit outside a playoff spot with only six games remaining. With the talent the Mets have on the roster, they should not be fighting for the final postseason spot. Regardless of whether they make it or not, this team has been a big disappointment.

Many have begun to compare this current Mets team with past teams that have disappointed. Joel Sherman of the New York Post recently said that this collapse is worse than the 2007 one. Although this season will go down as one of the biggest disappointments in franchise history, it’s nowhere close to as bad as 2007 was.

2007 is far more painful and embarrassing moment than 2025

In early September 2007, the Mets had a postseason berth all but wrapped up. They had a seven-game lead over the Phillies with 17 games remaining. Any thought that the team might miss the playoffs was seen as silly. Even when the Mets started to struggle, everyone still expected them to be playing in October. WFAN even had whole segments dedicated to how the Mets would set up their pitching in the playoffs while the Mets were hemorrhaging games to the Phillies.

2007 felt like the rug was pulled out from under everyone. They played great baseball for five months and were a lock for the postseason. At the beginning of September 2007, the Mets were tied with the Padres and the Diamondbacks for the best record in baseball. To go from that to not even qualifying for the postseason is extremely painful. It's an embarrassing moment and might be the worst month in franchise history.

2025, on the other hand, has felt like a slow burn. While they might also lose their playoff spot during the final week, this has been a long time coming. After being one of the best teams in baseball for the first two months, since the middle of June, they’ve been the worst. After blowing that game to the Rays on June 13th, something changed and turned the season on its head. Since that game, the Mets had a record of 35-52, fifth worst in the majors.

This is something that’s been brewing for months. While there were some hot stretches mixed in between, the writing was on the wall that this team was not good enough to make the postseason. Whether it was the struggling starting pitching or the offense being streaky, there were plenty of signs that things were not going to go the way the Mets hoped. It seemed this outcome was inevitable.

While 2025 has not been a picnic, it's far from the worst collapse in Mets history. 2007 will forever be the collapse that scared the entire fanbase.
