3 Freddy Peralta trade packages for the NY Mets with no top 100 prospects involved

The 2026 season was supposed to be the year Freddy Peralta cemented the New York Mets as contenders, but instead it has turned into a nightmare for both the pitcher and the club. Peralta was acquired from Milwaukee in January in exchange for top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat, with the expectation that he would slot in as the ace who completed the rotation. Instead, he is carrying an ERA and FIP that both rank among the worst marks of his career, while the Mets have collapsed into one of the worst teams in the Majors.

Because Peralta's contract expires at the end of this season and he would leave in free agency without any compensation if the Mets simply let him walk, and given the team's current position, New York needs to sell. Since Peralta isn't having his best year, however, his contract is very attractive due to its low salary, which draws small-market teams into the bidding and increases his value.

Tampa Bay Rays: Brody Hopkins

Of the three packages, this is the simplest and also the most valuable for the Mets, since it comes down to a single player who happens to be the most coveted prospect on this list. Brody Hopkins is the Rays' No. 1 arm in the system and their No. 4 overall prospect, and he has appeared inside MLB Pipeline's Top 100 on the strength of a fastball that can sit in the 96-99 mph range and a plus-caliber curveball. The issue that has capped his ceiling and knocked him off the Top 100 is his control, as his walk rate has climbed 4.5 percentage points this year, raising questions about his upside as a top-of-rotation starter. Even so, his arsenal is exactly what the Mets need to rebuild a young rotation, and with Double-A already conquered, Hopkins could make his Major League debut as soon as this season.

Chicago White Sox: Tanner McDougal and Christian Oppor

Chicago's system is loaded at the top but thins out quickly after the first three or four names, which is why any Peralta package from the White Sox likely needs to include two arms rather than one. Tanner McDougal, the organization's No. 5 prospect, brings a fastball that has touched triple digits to go with a plus curveball, though his Tommy John history keeps some risk attached to his medical file. Christian Oppor, ranked No. 7 in the system, rounds out the package with a quality changeup and a deceptive fastball, but he has dealt with a pronounced control regression at Double-A this year. Both project as mid-to-back-of-the-rotation starters with the risk of ending up in the bullpen, where their fastballs would make them elite relievers.

Toronto Blue Jays: Ricky Tiedemann and Javen Coleman

Ricky Tiedemann was once the top left-handed pitching prospect in all of baseball before Tommy John surgery derailed his rise and depressed his market value. When healthy, his fastball-changeup combination is big-league caliber, and MLB Pipeline describes him as practically ready to debut as a starter once his recovery is complete. That kind of risk-reward profile is exactly what a selling team like the Mets can afford to absorb in exchange for a two-month rental. Javen Coleman, the Blue Jays' No. 22 prospect, adds the second arm to the package. He is a left-hander whose development mirrors that of Christian Scott early in his professional career, when Scott was also viewed as a reliever before eventually working his way into a rotation.
