If Asdrubal Cabrera continues to hit the way he has early on in 2018, he may represent the New York Mets at this year’s All-Star Game.

The last time Asdrubal Cabrera was an All-Star, he was in his mid-20s and playing for the Cleveland Indians. In 2018, he has a chance to go back while representing the New York Mets.

Who would have thought when the Mets signed Cabrera ahead of the 2016 season that he would become the most reliable hitter three seasons later? Cabrera is by far the most trusted bat in this year’s lineup. On a team with many guys hitting below .250, Cabrera is an outlier with a batting average over .300.

Cabrera has batted .300 once in his career before. However, I suspect he will see the totals drop by season’s end. The .280 he hit in 2016 and 2017 is much more typical. Even at that number, Cabrera deserves a trip to Washington this summer.

More from Rising Apple

The Mets have only a small handful of players deserving All-Star consideration. Cabrera is the lone player who wields a bat each day. The rest are pitchers.

Jacob deGrom is a clear All-Star this year although time will tell whether or not he makes an appearance. We also have to give a thumb up to Noah Syndergaard and Jeurys Familia for their strong starts in 2018.

Because every team does need one player on the roster, it may be tougher for New York to send each of these men to the midsummer classic. Often, teams with few options send their best pitcher. This may remove Syndergaard and Familia from the mix.

Worse, other deserving candidates on this team may not have an opportunity. Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo are both having phenomenal years in the bullpen.

Though not common, we have seen non-closers selected to All-Star teams in recent years. Many of them had unworldly numbers so it will take a few more weeks of dominance from this pair in order to earn the nod.

For now, fans will need to settle on hoping Cabrera keeps this up. Up against some hard competition within his own division, Cabrera must continue carrying the Mets through June if he wants a chance at All-Star Game number three.

Next: Mets will never trade deGrom to the Yankees
