Mets will reportedly call up infielder Gavin Cecchini

With the Asdrubal Cabrera‘s injury news being somewhat positive, the Mets are making the right move bringing up a kid that can play multiple positions and fill in where needed.
According to SNY contributor, Adam Rubin, the Mets will be making a move to bring up an infielder from the minors to give a little more depth to the major league roster.

Unfortunately for fans, this infielder being called up won’t be shortstop Amed Rosario, but will instead be Gavin Cecchini. The team has not confirmed Rubin’s tweet, but it makes sense that they’d prefer Cecchini to Rosario at this point.
On Sunday, the Mets got some good news about Cabrera and his injured thumb. The MRI came back clean and showed no tear or damage to his UCL — the ligament between the thumb and the index finger.
Manager Terry Collins called Cabrera’s injury a jammed thumb, and said he was still very sore on Sunday. While the Amazin’s haven’t announced a disabled list placement for Cabrera yet, it wouldn’t surprise any of us for them to announce that at some point on Monday.
Seeing as how Cabrera’s injury is not as bad as it seems, it makes more sense to get a guy like Cecchini to fill in as he’s already had experience playing in the bigs, and he’s not considered as big of a prospect as Rosario is.
Cecchini’s main position is second base, but he has also been able to play shortstop and third base. If the Mets feel more comfortable with Reyes at short, they could move Cecchini around and fill in wherever he’s needed.

On the other hand, Amed is the shortstop of the future, so to get him up here for a week to play short and move Reyes back to a position he’s not as comfortable in, to then send Rosario back down may not be the best approach for his overall development. If Cabrera missed a considerable amount of time, that latter move would have made more sense.
We’ll see how the Mets plan on going forward because right now they could use all the help they can get.
