Awkward yet sweet Mets celebration with Huascar Brazoban has fans split
Was it more positive vibes or unneeded awkwardness after the Mets' win?
Look at the 8-3 score and you might not see a game as close as this one was for a team. The New York Mets and San Diego Padres combined to score 7 of the 11 runs on the night in the ninth inning. While the Mets were busy spraying doubles and singles throughout their 17 hit barrage, the Padres settled exclusively for one-base hits. In the ninth, they had some help with a pair of walks by Huascar Brazoban who managed to close things out.
With a 3-1 lead suddenly jumping up to 8-1, Carlos Mendoza turned to the righty picked up at the trade deadline for a smoother ninth. After retiring the first batter, the inning unfolded like a couple of Brazoban appearances have. Things got sticky.
Brazoban would allow 2 runs to cross the plate before finally bringing the game to its conclusion after 36 pitches. The Mets players could finally breathe a sigh of relief. They enjoyed a somewhat awkward exchange with Brazoban on the mound that has fans a bit divided on what to think.
The Mets won and had an unintentionally awkward celebration on the mound after
Brazoban knew he didn’t have his best stuff and clearly wasn’t ready for anything more than a couple of high-fives. The infielders rushing in looked more akin to the victory being a win that pushed them over the Padres in the standings. While it did secure the tie-breaker over San Diego, the upward climb remains.
Fans interpreted this in different ways. There were those who found it adorable:
And those who were scratching their heads way past their bedtimes:
Then some who didn’t rush to sleep after it was all over tried to find some logic to the choice to celebrate a bit more excessively than we usually see:
The intention was definitely about inclusion for Brazoban whose moments with the Mets have included some shaky outings. The Mets are going with the power of positivity. It's a commitment that has worked well for them thus far.
Now 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in his 10 innings with the ball club, this seemingly helpful trade hasn’t been nearly as effective as we thought it would be. In one-third of the total innings he pitched for Miami, he has already given up only 3 fewer earned runs. Brazoban has walked 7 versus the 11 he had for the Marlins.
Many fans seem convinced Brazoban will head down to Syracuse after this one and rightfully so. One of the perks of adding him was to have the minor league options available. With Dedniel Nunez expected back Friday, Brazoban might’ve given the Mets an answer as to whose roster spot he’ll take.
