Mets win might've broken the 2024 Red Sox, OMG supporter Kenley Jansen for good

The Red Sox might be done after losing 3 straight to the Mets.

Make it 7 in a row for the New York Mets. The team has played remarkably well, putting away all six of their games against the different colored Sox. First there was the task of doing the must versus the Chicago White Sox. Then came a homestand against the American League equivalent of the Mets, the Boston Red Sox.

Three straight wins against the latter became an absolute must for the Mets beyond just the standings. When Kenley Jansen stepped out of the visitor’s dugout with an OMG shirt in support of Mets infielder Jose Iglesias, he was tempting fate.

We’d never forgive a Mets player if they did what Kenley Jansen did then put together such a bad outing

Four consecutive walks helped the Mets tack on 4 more runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to push the score up to 8-3. It was an otherwise typical outing for Tylor Megill who didn’t last long. The offense wasn’t great either. Aside from the Jesse Winker grand slam, they added nothing else to the scoreboard until the 8th.

A win is a win no matter how you get it. The Mets found this victory with the bullpen holding down the fort. A shot at a save was erased because Jansen couldn’t find the strike zone. He was charged with 4 runs with only a Pete Alonso strikeout (complete with a broken bat over the knee) to show for it.

As crucial of wins as these three were for the Mets, the Red Sox needed them just as badly. Now losers of 5 in a row, they drop to 70-70 on the year and 5.5 games out of a Wild Card spot. The teams ahead of them, the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals, have both scuffled and gone 3-7 in their last 10. But so have the Red Sox who instead of gaining any ground have ended up chasing their own tails and seen their postseason odds shrink.

No Red Sox curse is at work here although it has to feel like a kick in the throat to see Jansen step out of the dugout with the celebratory slogan of the opponent. Baseball is about having fun, though, right? Tell that to the Red Sox fan today.
