The San Francisco Giants are practically bowing out of the NL Wild Card race and New York Mets rumors discussing the possibility of a Michael Conforto trade have already made the rounds. Although not an ideal fit for the Mets, he’d be a clear upgrade over the current outfield situation where they’re getting practically nothing from DJ Stewart and don’t really have a need at all for Ben Gamel.
Conforto isn’t the only player on the Giants roster the Mets could look to add. If they want to get bold, they’ll add in another reunion candidate. No, it’s not Wilmer Flores. This reunion is one with David Stearns.
Lefty reliever Taylor Rogers is playing with his twin Tyler Rogers. As much as the Giants would like to keep the twins together, the $12 million for Taylor this season and next is quite expensive for a guy who isn’t even the closer. The Mets should make an attempt to grab the southpaw away while willing to take on the rest of Conforto’s salary.
A Mets-Giants trade for Taylor Rogers and Michael Conforto
Rogers’ reunion with Stearns would come two years after he was traded from the San Diego Padres to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Josh Hader deal. A misfire in a lot of ways by Stearns because Rogers pitched to a 5.48 ERA in 23 innings for Milwaukee, we’ve seen him regularly go after players who didn’t work out so well in the past. Jackie Bradley Jr. apparently didn’t scare him off enough to sign him to a minor league deal recently.
With the Mets eating the remainder of Conforto’s $18 million salary this season, the price on Rogers comes down only slightly. It’ll still cost them something to obtain a talented lefty reliever.
It’s not a whole lot the Mets are giving up here in a deal that is essentially three prospects for Rogers plus the Mets taking on salary. A pair of injured players in Ronny Mauricio and Calvin Ziegler comes with risk for the Giants. Adding in Alex Ramirez, who has struggled at Double-A this year, doesn’t bring much intrigue.
However, all three are considered top 30 Mets prospects and there isn’t any reason to believe Mauricio will have difficulty coming back from his injury. Ziegler is a bit different because he is a pitcher and Tommy John surgery is never a safe bet.
Do the Giants sign off on a trade like this? Would Stearns be willing to run it back with Rogers on a new roster for a team desperate for a bullpen upgrade? The pair of reunions would create plenty of intrigue and will get the Mets closer to finalizing the best roster they can build.
