Mets trade deadline acquisition gets roughed up by the Braves in his debut
Shortly after their game against the Atlanta Braves, the New York Mets acquired veteran reliever Ryne Stanek in a trade with the Seattle Mariners. This was a move that was most certainly needed to add depth to a bullpen that has struggled throughout portions of the 2024 season.
The Mets gave up minor league outfielder Rhylan Thomas for Stanek. Thomas was the 30th ranked prospect in the Mets farm system and Stanek has not had an outstanding year with the Mariners thus far so the trade-off was pretty even.
The right-handed pitcher was sitting at a 4.38 ERA in 39.0 innings pitched with Seattle, but his stats got even worse when he made his debut with the Mets on Sunday afternoon.
Rough Welcome to New York
Stanek came into the game in the 7th inning to try to keep the score within range in order for the Mets to try and mount a comeback. The Braves bombarded him with a pair of home runs, one coming from Orlando Arcia and the other from Austin Riley.
Arcia led off the scoring affair with a solo shot and then Riley cashed in a pair on a two-run bomb to deep left field. This capped off Stanek's day with one inning pitched, two hits given up, three earned runs, and one strikeout.
It was definitely not the most encouraging outing from Stanek, however, it was his first of many as one of the newest members of the Mets organization. Stanek just needs some time to adjust to his new team and when he does become acclimated he can be a vital piece to this bullpen.
At the end of the day, if Carlos Mendoza is glad that Stanek is on our side then Mets fans should feel the exact same way. He has pitched in some big playoff games and has shut the door on some close regular season games when his number was called upon. The potential is there, but it is up to Stanek to reach down deep and pull it out of himself.
