The New York Mets knew that around the trading deadline, they needed to add a starting pitcher. Especially after just one start made by ace Kodai Senga, it was almost a sure thing that the Mets needed to add another starter in their rotation if they wanted to be a postseason team this year.

There were plenty of starting pitching candidates the Mets could have gone after to try and trade for and add to their rotation with one of them being, lefty Trevor Rogers. The Mets knew Rogers well during his days with the Miami Marlins and was certainly somebody that the Mets thought they could have used. But after the Baltimore Orioles went out and got them, the Mets should be happy that they did not get him after all.

The Mets should be relieved they didn't trade for Trevor Rogers

Rogers was somebody that Baltimore thought could be a reliable backend starter in their rotation when they acquired him almost a month ago, that has surely not been the case. The lefty who was also a former first-round pick back in 2017 has gone 0-2 in his four games started for the Orioles and has seen his ERA balloon from 4.53 to 7.11 since coming to Baltimore. His latest start against the Mets seemed to seal his fate as after going just 4.2 innings giving up five hits, three earned runs and walking five batters, the Orioles sent him down to Triple-A.

It is safe to the Mets made the right move by not bidding harder to trade for Rogers. Despite Paul Blackburn not being a well-known pitcher who was not talked about enough during the trading deadline cycle, the Mets should be very happy they traded for the former Oakland A's righty. Blackburn has pitched to a 3.68 ERA in his four starts with the Mets, has gone 1-1 and has gone at least six innings in three of those four starts. Props to David Stearns for trading for this starter.

There's no question that the Mets needed a starting pitcher considering how big of a hit it took after seeing their ace of the rotation go back on the injured list after one start. Rogers was certainly not the answer the Mets needed after four horrific starts with the O's. New York dodged a major bullet by opting for Blackburn and hopefully, this move can pay off when the regular season comes to an end and the Mets can squeeze into a playoff spot.
