Yankess loss proves the Mets can't relax even against MLB's worst teams
The Mets should not take any team lightly.
Despite the New York Mets going 4-6 during their 10-game road trip which concluded being swept by the Seattle Mariners and being outscored 22-1 in three games. Their cross-town rivals had a night to forget on Monday. The New York Yankees traveled to the southside of Chicago to play the White Sox on Monday who are having a historically bad year and got embarrassed, to say the least.
The Yankees fell to Chicago by a score of 12-2 as it was just the White Sox's second win in August and first home win since July 10. For a Yankees team that has World Series aspirations this year, that was a concerning loss to the worst team in baseball this season. And as the Mets prepare a nine-game homestand against two teams that are also having rough seasons, they should learn from this Yankees loss that no win is a guarantee for them.
The Mets should not take their opponents lightly this week
The Mets begin their nine-game homestand on Tuesday one game behind the Atlanta Braves for the final NL Wild Card spot. They will start this stretch with a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics, who despite also having a miserable season, is a team that the Mets should still take seriously if they want to gain ground in the playoff race.
The A's have already matched their win total from last year at 50 and have some talented players on their roster that the A's organization is confident they can build around. From power hitters like outfielders Brent Rooker, JJ Bleday and others as well as a solid pitching staff that features flame thrower closer Mason Miller, there is certainly talent on this roster. It would not be a surprise if the A's play the Mets competitively this week, especially after the way the Mets concluded their road trip.
New York will also play three games with their rivals, the Miami Marlins who despite holding one of the worst records in the National League, have given the Mets fits this year winning five out of their ten games against them. This is a crucial stretch to the Mets season that may make or break their season. Despite taking on two teams that are in the basement of their divisions, they should look at the Yankees' shocking loss to Chicago on Monday and realize to not take any team lightly.
