Mets rumors: A trade for Marlins pitcher Trevor Rogers would be underwhelming

The Mets have interest in a Marlins pitcher who doesn't get the juices flowing.

Some late morning New York Mets rumors courtesy of SNY’s Andy Martino point to Miami Marlins starting pitcher Trevor Rogers.

The 26-year-old lefty and former 13th overall pick from 2017 has been much better of late, pitching to a 3.56 ERA in June and dropping it to 3.38 in July. The 54.1 inning span has been a positive for him.

But here’s the catch. Rogers hasn’t gone more than 5.2 innings in any start this month. He went 5+ in all June starts which is good to see but those high pitch counts in July including 99 in just 4.2 innings against the Mets on July 21 should have us concerned about this being the splash the Mets decide to make.

Mets rumors regarding a possible Trevor Rogers trade are underwhelming

There isn’t a clear reason as to why Rogers would be of such great interest to the Mets who need much more in their rotation. A 4.42 FIP suggests he has been about exactly where he should be in terms of earned runs allowed. A terrible 1.52 WHIP and low 7.3 strikeouts per 9 offer little to excite.

Rogers has been hit hard this year. An average exit velocity of 90.3 and hard-hit percentage of 43.5% are both career-highs. With only one year of control beyond this season, there isn’t even the case of getting a future rotation asset. Rogers has, until this point, been a bit of a disappointment.

He does have minor league options which fits well with any plan to have more starting pitching depth in Syracuse. Given the interest of other teams, it would seem like a lot to pay for to add a guy you aren’t even going to immediately turn to.

If the Mets are going to strike a deal for a starting pitcher, it needs to be far better than Rogers. He won’t come for free. This one should be an easy pass for most fans.
