As far as New York Mets rumors go, the strangest one people seem to be trying to create has to do with the idea of, brace yourself, trading Pete Alonso. Originating from multiple places including Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and an interview with Jon Heyman of the New York Post, this is one of those Mets rumors we can stomp out pretty quickly.

Both Rosenthal and Heyman believe the obvious: the Mets aren’t in any rush to trade the now three-time All-Star first baseman. So why bring it up in the first place?

There are no real Mets rumors about a possible Pete Alonso trade

Putting Daniel Vogelbach in the five-hole during a slump every night is punting. Trading Alonso is handing the ball to a lineman and telling him your PIN number. It’s rolling over and letting him take your family on an all-expenses paid vacation. You don’t do it.

Alonso is one of the few players on the Mets roster who have a 0% chance of getting traded. He is so locked into the culture of the organization, beloved by the fans, and essential to their success when they plan to compete next season. You trade Alonso only when you have the need to do it. That need doesn’t exist for the Mets right now nor will it until he’s approaching free agency and not getting an extension.

Speaking of extensions, any day now would be a good time for the Mets to hand one out to Alonso. There hasn’t been much good news for the ball club of late as they slip further away from playoff positioning. They’re now at a point where they’ll need to be the hottest team in baseball just to make the playoffs with one of the weaker records of all postseason clubs.

Whether they’re Mets rumors or internet trolls trying to ruin your 2024 already, keep calm and trust in Steve Cohen. As bad as some of the trades Billy Eppler may continue to make will be, Cohen’s not letting Alonso go without a fight.
