The New York Mets have begun making moves. David Robertson was first to go, and Max Scherzer was the big surprise. Guys like Tommy Pham and Mark Canha should be traded before the deadline, but one name everyone is discussing is Justin Verlander.

With the Mets trading Scherzer, it's unclear what their plans are with their other future Hall of Fame ace. Do they keep him and intend to compete in 2024, or do they trade him and try and continue to stock up what will be a much-improved farm system?

A Verlander trade is one I'd deem unlikely. There're a lot of moving parts like his age, contract, and amount he'd demand in return prospect-wise. With the Mets not interested in a full on rebuild, Verlander is obviously a guy they'd want to keep.

If Verlander is traded, the Orioles make a lot of sense as a team for the Mets to work with. They're in first place in the AL East, and the only thing they really lack is a bonafide ace. Verlander is exactly that. They have one of, if not the best prospect pools in the game for the Mets to pick from. While Jackson Holliday is unlikely to be available, there're three other players the Mets should be demanding from Baltimore if a trade did go down.

1) NY Mets Justin Verlander trade target: Grayson Rodriguez

Not too long ago, Grayson Rodriguez was one of the best prospects in all of baseball. The 6'5 right-hander has had a rocky start to his MLB career, but is absolutely an arm the Mets should target for Verlander.

Rodriguez began the year on the Opening Day roster but had a rough start to his season. He had an ERA of 7.35 through his first ten starts of the year, causing the Orioles to send him down to the minors. Rodriguez went back to dominating as he posted a 1.96 ERA in his eight starts in AAA before being recalled in mid-July.

Since his recall, Rodriguez has shown why he was so highly touted. A 3.18 in his last three starts including 6.1 scoreless innings against the Yankees his last time out. Rodriguez has a fastball that can reach triple digits and devastating offspeed stuff.

The Mets likely won't get a player who will ever be as good as Verlander is right now, but Rodriguez is one of the better high-potential young pitchers they can realistically acquire.

2) NY Mets Justin Verlander trade target: Colton Cowser

The Orioles top prospect just so happens to be the top prospect in all of baseball, Jackson Holliday. As awesome as it'd be for the Mets to land Holliday, it's highly unlikely. Their second-best prospect is Colton Cowser, and that wouldn't be a bad consolation prize.

Cowser is a 23-year-old outfielder who's ranked as the 12th best prospect in all of baseball according to MLB Pipeline. He was picked fifth overall by the Orioles in the 2021 MLB Draft and earned his first call-up to the majors in early July.

Since being promoted, Cowser hasn't done much. He has just five hits in 47 at-bats. He has just a .399 OPS and an 18 OPS+. As discouraging as that looks, I wouldn't put too much stock into a 47 at-bat sample.

Cowser is viewed as a player who can do just about anything. He can hit, has power, can play good defense in the outfield, and can run. This season he had a .996 OPS in AAA with ten home runs and seven stolen bases in 56 games.

Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte are both locked in for the next couple of years but left field is wide open for a guy like Cowser to potentially step in and cover. The Orioles have the outfield depth necessary to be fine moving him, and the Mets have the opening to play him.

3) NY Mets Justin Verlander trade target: Heston Kjerstad

Another outfielder the Mets can pursue from the Orioles system is Heston Kjerstad. The 24-year-old was selected second overall by the O's in the 2020 MLB Draft out of the University of Arkansas and after missing all of 2021, has shot up the Orioles system rather quickly.

Kjerstad went from playing in single-A last season all the way up to raking in AAA this season. And when I say raking, I mean absolutely raking.

Kjerstad is slashing .342/.419/.604 with seven home runs and 20 RBI in 39 games for Norfolk. 21 of his 51 hits have been for extra bases, and he hasn't slowed down at all in July, as he had an OPS of 1.094 this month.

If there's one thing Mets fans have wanted this team to add on offense, it's power. Kjerstad might not be the all-around type of player Cowser is projected to be, but his bat looks like it can be elite. He has power to all fields and his .318 average in the minors suggests he can get hits without them just leaving the yard.

If the Mets were to acquire him, Kjerstad would fit in nicely in left or right for the better part of a decade at least. Losing Verlander would sting, but adding a prospect or two from this list would soften the blow quite a bit.
