The Mets should do the exact opposite of what the Braves just did and choose talented youth

The Atlanta Braves get a lot of credit for locking up their young players to team-friendly deals. They aren’t winning any awards for their shortstop decision. The biggest rival of the New York Mets has chosen to send Vaughn Grissom to the minors in favor of naming Orlando Arcia the starting shortstop and keeping Ehire Adrianza for depth.

In the words of every character in South Park, weak.

The Mets have a similar roster decision to make and they should do the exact opposite

What does this have to do with the Mets? Their roster decision with Brett Baty is similar. Rather than hold onto Darin Ruf who hasn’t played well with the team in the regular season or this spring, the Mets need to look toward the future and award Baty with the roster spot. They could even give it to Mark Vientos instead. It doesn’t matter much. Give the more talented players a chance right now.

Decisions like this should have Mets fans feeling good for now. The Braves are trusting the process over early wins. Grissom was more than a candidate to begin the year on their roster. He should’ve been the one to take over for Dansby Swanson at shortstop. Instead, Atlanta will make a roster decision that will provide them with depth but not much else.

The decision over in Queens is actually much easier to make. Baty does give the Mets more depth. The ability to play third base and left field is the scissor to Ruf’s paper of being able to play right field and first base.

Choices like these are where the Mets can take advantage. While I do understand there are a ton of factors at play, like having relievers with minor league options for instance, the most important moves are the ones that give you the best players possible.

Mets fans know there are better selections than Ruf on the 40-man roster just as those who cheer on the Braves know Grissom needed to be with the big league club on Opening Day.
