5 Mets players we already forgot were on the 2022 roster at some point
It takes more than a 26-man roster to get through an MLB season. The New York Mets have invited plenty of participants to the 2022 roster and could break last year’s record of having 64 players appear in a game.
There are those Mets we remember well and think about constantly. Then there are those others who stop over quickly and fade out of existence.
If you remember each of these forgotten Mets from the 2022 roster, the team needs to send you some season tickets.
1) Forgotten NY Mets player: Ender Inciarte
The most notable major leaguer on this list is Ender Inciarte. The former All-Star and Gold Glove outfielder landed with the Mets earlier this year and actually saw action in 11 games for them. He received 8 plate appearances and mustered up a single hit.
Inciarte is someone Mets fans are familiar with because of his six years with the Atlanta Braves. There is a reason, though, as to why the Braves no longer employ him. His career is winding down and he’s much more like Travis Jankowski than the starting center fielder he was for many years.
Adding Inciarte to the Mets roster was in response to the team having some injuries pile up and few internal options on the 40-man roster or even anyone in the minor leagues worthy of being added to it. His time with the club was never going to last very long. He was a placeholder until others came off the IL.
Gone and almost entirely forgotten, if you remember him, you’re off to a good start.
2) Forgotten NY Mets player: R.J. Alvarez
While Inciarte was able to insert himself into almost a dozen games, pitcher R.J. Alvarez only received one appearance. Take a night off from the Mets and you may have missed him surrender 3 earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.
A veteran minor league signing by the team in the offseason, Alvarez was never meant to be anything more than depth. He hadn’t even pitched in a major league game since 2015 but received his chance on August 16 against the Atlanta Braves.
Following an early exit from Taijuan Walker, Buck Showalter called upon him to try and keep things scoreless. It wasn’t the wisest of choices as he would take the loss.
3) Forgotten NY Mets player: Sam Clay
Sam Clay is another one of those pitchers the Mets called upon for a game this season. After making his debut last year and getting in a few more innings with the Washington Nationals again in 2022, he ended up as a summer waiver claim by New York from the Philadelphia Phillies who had only taken him from D.C. a few days earlier.
It was on August 20, against the Phillies, that Clay would toss a scoreless ninth inning in the 8-2 victory for New York.
Every year has a couple of players like Clay come through. That one appearance ensured he’ll be eligible for a World Series ring if the Mets are able to pull it off.
4) Forgotten NY Mets player: Matt Reynolds
Matt Reynolds is actually having a very good year. It’s just not with the Mets. The Cincinnati Reds picked him up after only one game played for the Mets where he didn’t even get a chance to step into the batter’s box.
Reynolds finished the April 16th game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in right field for New York. It would be his lone appearance of the year for the team. The Reds, in some desperate need of live bodies, plucked him off waivers about a week later and he has been playing all over the field for them this season.
Reynolds, if he was able to produce for the Mets this year, could have been a pretty valuable piece to have. Unfortunately, there just wasn’t space for a journeyman utility player or enough patience to let him figure things out.
5) Forgotten NY Mets player: Connor Grey
You may not have noticed Connor Grey on the Mets because he didn’t even pitch for them during his brief stay on their roster. The 28-year-old pitcher has been in Syracuse for most of the year. However, late in the summer, the Mets promoted him for reinforcement.
Grey never did get into a game and was designated for assignment shortly after. His chance to pitch in the big leagues for them could be over already.
At least he was, even only as a bystander, a member of a major league club this season.
