Predicting Pete Alonso will hit 43 home runs today wouldn’t exactly be bold. We have a short enough road in the regular season where specific player numbers fall more into the category of “likely” or “possible” rather than bold. Nevertheless, there is some boldness to go around as far as predictions for the New York Mets. These might not be the boldest of bold predictions but they are very specific.

The team has eight games to go with a pair versus the Miami Marlins, three huge ones against the Atlanta Braves, and finally three to finish it off versus the Washington Nationals.

What kind of boldness can we possibly predict with so little time left? Let’s find out.

1) NY Mets prediction: A sweep of the Marlins before the Braves series

Take ‘em both! The Mets will get a chance to build some strong momentum in their short two-game series against the Marlins at home this week. Carlos Carrasco and Taijuan Walker will each get the ball in what should be their penultimate appearances of the season.

Against Pablo Lopez and Jesus Luzardo, the Mets have the advantage on the mound but not much more so than any team would during the course of the season. The Mets could always throw up a stinker against the Marlins and only come away with one victory. With the pressure on, I’m predicting everything goes right for the Mets against the Marlins.

Miami is trudging through these final days. They won’t be able to do what they have accomplished in the past and spoil the Mets’ season. Will someone else get that opportunity? Let’s check the crystal ball to find out.

2) NY Mets prediction: Jacob deGrom loses to the Braves

The series we all want to know more about—what happens when the Mets and Braves clash over the weekend?

The Mets and Braves will have a hard-fought battle in game one with New York coming away on top but just barely. Let’s call this a 3-2 victory. Chris Bassitt is solid and Edwin Diaz has no issues closing it out.

In game two, the Braves get the best of Jacob deGrom. Coming off of a poor start against the Oakland Athletics, this is scheduled to be his final regular season appearance. Does he step up and defeat the Braves or do they get the best of him? I’m predicting we get a better performance from the longtime Mets ace but a loss at the end of the day.

deGrom is going against Kyle Wright who has been very fortunate in the win column this season. It’s hard to picture the Mets going into Atlanta and winning all three games. Out of some sort of sick sadism, it’s deGrom who takes the loss.

Fortunately, the second part of this prediction has Max Scherzer dominating the Braves on Sunday. This will be a game where the Mets bats really liven up and help the team lower the magic number a little bit more.

Sadly, the clincher won’t come in this series. We’ll have to try to get it against the Nationals at home.

3) NY Mets prediction: The clincher happens on Tuesday

It will be on Tuesday when the Mets finally clinch the division. They’ll end up only a single game ahead of the Braves because they won’t have any issue against the Marlins at the end of their schedule.

There is some good and bad to clinching on this date. The one day of rest and relaxation to cap off the year will give the team a chance to digest and enjoy the victory. A division title already does give the Mets the first-round bye in the playoffs. This will award them with an extra day.

As much as a clincher in Atlanta would be nice, this would at least happen at home in front of more New Yorkers. Citi Field should be as ruckus as possible on a Tuesday when Walker steps on the mound to get things started. By the middle of the game, it’s clear they’ll be winning this one and knocking the magic number down from one to nothing!

October 4 is a late day to clinch the division. In 2022, it’s almost as late as it gets.

What do you predict for the Mets in their final 8 games? If it’s destruction, you haven’t been paying close attention for the first 154.
