Who are the last 5 Mets players with 100 RBI in a single season?
The last five Mets players to hit triple digits with runs batted in.
New York Mets first baseman, Pete Alonso is once again having a strong season and is making the case that he should be the next Mets player to get a big contract extension as he's on his way to having 100 plus RBI in the regular season for the third time in five big league seasons. Despite New York's struggles in 2023, it has not fazed Alonso as he's once again proving to be one of the best power hitters in all of baseball.
But he's not the only Met who's put up over 100 RBI during their tenure with the Mets. You won't be surprised about the number of players that have done it in the team's history and who have been doing it in consecutive seasons for the orange and blue. Looking back more recently, which five New York Mets players, in particular, have accomplished that historic feat?
Last 5 Mets players with 100 RBI: Pete Alonso (2019, 2022)
No surprise here, ever since Alonso, or the "Polar Bear" as he's affectionately referred to as, he's entered the league by storm and again is putting up incredible numbers in 2023. But when he entered the league in 2019 for the first time, he did not only drive in over 100 runs, he added some history along with it as well.
When he came up to the big leagues, it was at first a bit of a tough beginning for Alonso, but he quickly turned things around in a big way after he hit his first career home run on April 1 against the Miami Marlins. Alonso's 2019 season was filled with record-breaking moments like hitting his 26th home run of the season on June 22nd against the Cubs which broke the most home runs before the All-Star Break in National League history and hitting his 30th home run of the season on July 7th becoming only the second Met to do that before the All-Star Break as well.
But perhaps the most significant moment of that season came towards the end of the season when he hit his 53rd home run of the season which broke Aaron Judge's rookie home run record against the Braves on September 27th as he finished off the season with 53 long balls and 120 runs batted in. After the pandemic-shortened season in 2020 and collecting 94 RBI the year after, the 2022 season was yet another historic one for Alonso.
In 2022, Alonso went on another tear and started out with a bang in the Mets opening series against the Washington Nationals on April 9th. Alonso saw himself that year break the Mets single-season RBI record with 125 against the Oakland Athletics and hit his 40th home run that season on September 27th against the Marlins becoming the first Met to accomplish that feat twice. He went on the finish that year with 40 home runs and 131 RBI which were the most in the major leagues that season.
Last 5 Mets players with 100 RBI: Francisco Lindor (2022)
The Mets trade for shortstop Francisco Lindor in 2021 was franchise-altering as they were getting not only a sliver slugger but also a gold glover at short that the Mets have longed for. But in his first season in Flushing, it did not go the way Lindor or the Mets would have hoped.
Lindor only wound up hitting 20 home runs with 69 RBI with a batting average of .230 in 125 games which got fans worried about whether or not this was the right trade to make after letting go of fellow infielders Ahmed Rosario and Andres Gimenez in the trade package. But 2022 was a complete turnaround for "Mr. Smiles," which got Mets fans excited about what he can do in his next several years with the club after a down season in 2021.
Lindor missed all but one game in 2022 and hit 26 homes with 107 RBI which was a career-high for him that season and set numerous Mets records during that season as well. And just like Alonso, he had record-breaking performances in 2022 as after he recorded his 82nd RBI of the season, he broke former Mets shortstop Jose Reyes' record of most RBI by a Mets shortstop. Lindor also hit his 24th home run of the season against the Pirates on September 24th which broke Reyes' record again as this one was for most home runs by a Mets shortstop in team history.
Last 5 Mets players with 100 RBI: David Wright (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010)
David Wright or the "Captain" as he was eventually named as was perhaps the most consistent player the Mets had, especially during the prime of his playing days. Once Wright was called up in 2004, the Mets knew they had something special in their young third baseman as in just his second season, he impressed everyone in baseball.
In 2005 at just 22, Wright was seen as the best third baseman in the game as in 160 games, Wright batted .306 with 27 home runs and 102 RBI along with 99 runs scored, 42 doubles and 17 stolen bases. He was a player that every team dreamed of. Wright was also named in the top ten in the National League for average, hits, total bases, RBI, extra-base hits and runs. So what can he do for an encore in 2006?
In 2006, Wright had another exceptional l year as he was named to his first MLB All-Star Game being named the starting third baseman. His 2006 season saw him collect 74 RBI before the All-Star break broke Mike Piazza's record at the time in 2002 with 72 and ended up exceeding his RBI total from last year from 102 to 116 which award him a contract extension of 6 years worth $55 million.
The 2007 season for Wright was another strong campaign as his season was again filled with record-breaking performances he had at one point a 26-game hit streak which was a franchise record and became at the time the 29th player in MLB history join to 30-30 club with 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in the same season. Wright had a total of 107 RBI that season and was fourth in the NL voting for the MVP and he was just getting started as 2008 was another great showing.
The 2008 season for Wright saw him hit his 100th career home run in just his fifth MLB season on April 13th against the Brewers and had his first career walk-off home run that season as well on August 7. Wright exceeded his RBI total by plenty that year with 124 along with batting over .300 in five straight seasons.
After an injury-plagued season in 2009 seeing him only collect 72 RBI, the 2010 season saw a healthy David Wright and his power resurgence that Mets fans loved to see. That year saw Wright make the All-Star Game again as the third baseman starter and was named the 2010 June Player of the Month collecting 6 home runs and 29 RBI that month. He finished off the season with a .283 batting average but more importantly, 103 RBI which ended up being the last time in his career he would have 100 RBI or more in a season.
Last 5 Mets players with 100 RBI: Carlos Beltran (2006, 2007 and 2008)
Carlos Beltran's tenure with the Mets was one full of ups and downs with the downs being getting caught looking with the bases loaded in the 2006 NLCS against the St. Louis Cardinals with the bases loaded but he still had a very impressive tenure with the Mets, especially with the bat.
After a slow beginning with the Mets in 2005 after being signed to a 7-year contract worth $119 million, the 2006 season saw the beginning of something special in Flushing, Queens for Beltran. That year, he was one of three Mets on the All-Start Game roster that year and most notably hit grand slams in back-to-back games for New York on July 16th and 17th. He ended up having 41 long balls that year which at the time tied the Mets single-season record for home runs matching Todd Hundley who did in 1996 and had 116 RBI which was a career high for Beltran.
2007 was another great year for Beltran as after a slow start to his season only batting in the .230 area from May to July, his average improved by a lot as he finished with an average of .276 that season and was named to his fourth straight All-Star Game and won a Gold Glove for the second straight season. It was another 100 RBI-plus season for him as he ended with 112 in 144 games played.
For a third straight season in 2008, it was another great season for the Mets outfielder as he missed only one game the entire season. In the 161 games played, Beltran's power was still on full display slugging 27 home runs on the season and matched his RBI total from a year ago with 112 again.
Last 5 Mets players with 100 RBI: Carlos Delgado (2006 and 2008)
This should come as no surprise, prime Carlos Delgado was a force to be recokned with as during his tenure with the Mets, it was the 2006 and 2008 season's that stood out mostly for the Mets and Mets fans.
Coming from the Florida Marlins in 2006, when he batted cleanup for the Mets, he proved why the Mets put him in that spot in their lineup. In 144 games, Delgado had 38 home runs and drove in 114 runs during the Mets NL East Title season that saw them make it all the way to the NLCS that year before eventually falling to the St. Louis Cardinals.
After a bit of a down year in 2007 only having 87 RBI in 139 games, his power was back on full display for the Mets as despite being diagnosed with a hip impingement during Spring Training, the Mets decided to keep him on the active roster and the injury did not seem to bother him at all. That year saw him break a few records with the first one being on June 15th as he broke Juan Gonzalez's record for most runs batted in by a Puerto Rican player in their career as well as setting a Mets club record with the most runs batted in a game with 9 against the Yankees on June 27th breaking Dave Kingman's record of 8 runs batted in. It was another sensational year for Mets first baseman as he finished off the season with 115 RBI in 159 games played.
