Probable starting pitchers
Tylor Megill takes the ball for his third start of the season. Megill has been a pleasant surprise, pitching well in each of his first two starts of the season. He threw a gem in the Home Opener delivering six shutout innings in a victory against the Marlins. Megill faces a much tougher Padres lineup this time around, as he looks to give the Mets a series victory in the final game of their first homestand of the season.
Opposing Megill will be Blake Snell. The Padres southpaw struggled in his postseason start against the Mets but has pitched very well against them in the regular season. He has a 2.73 ERA in six starts against the Mets in his career including a 2.33 ERA in five starts at Citi Field. The Padres Opening Day starter has allowed seven runs in just eight innings of work over his first two starts, so hopefully this Mets offense can get to him early and often.
New York Mets starting lineup
1. Brandon Nimmo - CF
2. Starling Marte - RF
3. Francisco Lindor - SS
4. Pete Alonso - 1B
5. Mark Canha - LF
6. Jeff McNeil - 2B
7. Tommy Pham - DH
8. Eduardo Escobar - 3B
9. Tomas Nido - C
The Mets starting lineup looks like most of the lineups they've run out against southpaws with Tommy Pham inserted and Daniel Vogelbach on the bench. My only issue with the lineup is Buck Showalter's refusal to insert Francisco Alvarez even as the DH. If he is going to be on the MLB roster, let him play at least two of the three games in a series. There's no reason Mark Canha can't get a day off or Tommy Pham can't sit against a lefty to allow this to happen. We saw how antsy Alvarez was last night, that might not happen if he played more than once per series.
San Diego Padres starting lineup
1. Trent Grisham - CF
2. Manny Machado - 3B
3. Juan Soto - LF
4. Xander Bogaerts - SS
5. Jake Cronenworth - 1B
6. Matt Carpenter - DH
7. Austin Nola - C
8. Rougned Odor - 2B
9. Brandon Dixon - RF
