We are just a few months away from Opening Day, and New York Mets fans couldn't be more excited. The Mets open up their season on the road in Miami to take on the Marlins, and even though there will be many Mets fans in attendance, the date every Mets fan circled on their calendar is the home opener.
April 6th will be the Mets' first game of the season at Citi Field in front of the New York faitful against the Miami Marlins. The home opener is one of the most significant events of the year as a sellout crowd comes to see the team for the first time of the year.
As a person like myself that goes to every home opener, the most memorable moment is the player introductions. The Mets have a lot of fan favorites and new faces to cheer for this year, and it got me thinking, which player deserves to get the biggest ovation this upcoming Opening Day?
Mets CF Brandon Nimmo deserves biggest ovation
Mets leadoff hitter and starting centerfielder Brandon Nimmo had a great year last season. He was the perfect leadoff hitter as he made starting pitchers work and got on base a lot as he finished the season with a .367 OBP. Nimmo became a Mets fan favorite, but there were questions about his future with the team as this offseason was his first as a free agent.
The Mets had a lot of questions and decisions to make this offseason, and bringing back Nimmo was one of them. Of course, all Mets fans wanted him back, but some thought he would have been too expensive even for an owner like Steve Cohen, as he and general manger Billy Eppler had many other decisions to make.
However, Nimmo and the Mets agreed on an 8-year, $162 million contract. Nimmo made it clear that he wanted to remain in New York, and Mets fans will take that to heart. Nimmo mentioned in his press conference how much it meant to him to stay in New York and that he wants to win a championship in a Mets uniform.
Nimmo made known that he wanted to stay in Queens, which will hit Mets fans in a special place in their hearts. As Mets fans, we want players that are proud to wear the orange and blue, and Nimmo is one of those guys and is sure to get a huge ovation on Opening Day.
