We are almost a month into the MLB season and the New York Mets are off to a good start despite the injuries the team has faced. With the losses of Edwin Diaz for the season and Justin Verlander for at least a couple more weeks, the Mets are sitting at 14-9 and just concluded a 7-3 West Coast trip.
With the Mets set to return home this week and as we are entering the month of May, it begs the question, has the Mets offseason moves panned out the way they hoped they would? Are some of them exceeding our expectations or are some of the newly acquired Mets disappointed us? What grade do the Mets deserve from the offseason moves they have made?
The Mets get a 'B' for their offseason moves
A grade of 'B' is the right grade to give the Mets even though we still have yet to see Verlander pitch, I still think some of the moves the Mets have made so far have worked out well. One player I have really been impressed with has been Tommy Pham. Pham, who was mainly brought in for his defense has had a nice start on offense in the month of April as he has already hit a couple of home runs with six runs batted in with a respectable batting average of .231. He's been someone who I think provides a lot of depth to the Mets offense.
And of course Brandom Nimmo who has been playing so good so far and is proving he was worth the contract he was signed too. Nimmo already has a batting average of .350 on the season and just finshed up going 11 for 19 in five games played.
And of course pitching wise, the bullpen pieces the Mets brought in have been impressive. Brooks Raley and Jeff Brigham, for example, have pitched really well for the Mets with the starting pitching rotation being decimated by injuries and of course Max Scherzer's suspension. Raley has posted a 3.60 ERA in his 11 games pitched while Brigham has yet to allow a run in his three appearances.
So, with the Mets roster already dealing with some injuries, it has not stopped the Mets from winning ballgames as they sit a half a game behind first in the NL East. While we are still waiting to see if Verlander can replicate his Cy Young award winning season from a year ago and for other free agent signings like Kodai Senga looking to pitch better, these signings have been good ones I think for the Mets. Some players have looked a bit shaky but a 'B' is the grade I would give the Mets for the offseason moves they have made so far.
