Pete Alonso quote after first loss basically confirms he’ll be a captain one day
Pete Alonso, you’ll be a captain soon. We love you so much, can’t count all the ways. You won the New York Mets fans over before even stepping up to a big league plate. Continually, you do things to remind everyone why as a rookie people were already hollering for you to become the team’s next captain.
The slump in 2020 nixed the idea temporarily but as the most consistent offensive performer in 2021, the idea returned. The Mets don’t necessarily need a captain because in baseball it never hurts to have multiple leaders. The worst thing you can do is have none. With Alonso around, the Mets always have at least one.
After the club dropped their first game of the 2022 season in large part due to an error by Alonso, the Polar Bear delivered a quote that confirmed he is still on the trajectory to get a C on his chest.
Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is taking ownership and setting an example
Was this the perfect way to handle it or what? It’s pretty amazing the contrast between Alonso and certain New York Yankees pitchers who have a bad debut and blame it on Billy Crystal. You know who you are, Gerrit Cole.
Taking ownership isn’t easy for a mistake. And while Alonso didn’t really have a choice in the matter because it’s a simple fact that he dropped contributed to the loss, he faced the mistake head-on and will come away stronger.
As easy as it may seem from afar for Alonso to say all of the right things, it’s not always so simple. Finger-pointing is easy. Finding an excuse or some other justification can make you feel less like a loser, too.
Alonso has been nothing but mature in regards to the game. Sure, he has a goofiness about him in other areas. The whole Donnie Stevenson saga showed his lighter side. During the Home Run Derby, he goes into silly mode and focuses on having some fun. Alonso is an entertainer, after all. It’s a part of the job as a professional athlete.
David Wright didn’t become the captain of the Mets until 2013. It was almost a full decade after his career had begun. If things go similarly with Alonso, we have about another half-decade.
Until then, expect more of Alonso’s inner leader to show. Quotes like this early in the season can go a long way. It sets an example for the younger players. It relays to the new veterans that Pete “gets it” and they need to understand it, too.
