MLB free agency has begun, and the stove is hot. MLB Trade Rumors released their top 50 free agent list. It includes four of their staff members predicting where each of the top 50 free agents will sign and for how much. This offseason is a big one for the New York Mets after falling in the Wild Card Round with many big names available.
Where do they believe Mets free agents will land?
NY Mets free agent: Jacob deGrom
Two members of the staff have deGrom landing with the Rangers, one has him going to St. Louis, with the fourth has him returning to the Mets. I'm hoping deGrom does return to Flushing as he's the best pitcher on the planet and of course should be a career Met.
NY Mets free agent: Brandon Nimmo
Two members of the staff have Nimmo returning to the Mets while the other two have Nimmo going to the Astros and Giants respectively. Nimmo is the guy the Mets need back the most, they cannot afford to see him leave.
NY Mets free agent: Chris Bassitt
The staff believes Chris Bassitt has played his final game as a Met. Two out of four believe he will head to Minnesota while the other two believe he will go to the Dodgers and Rangers respectively. With the Mets rotation lacking depth, they could really use Bassitt.
NY Mets free agent: Taijuan Walker
Two out of four believe Taijuan Walker is headed to San Diego with the other two believing he will head to the Orioles and Giants respectively. The Mets need higher-end starters anyway, so losing Walker isn't a huge deal in my eyes.
NY Mets free agent: Adam Ottavino
After Adam Ottavino's great season the staff believes Ottavino will head elsewhere. They have him going to Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Atlanta respectively. I can deal with Boston or San Francisco, just don't let Ottavino go to the Phillies or Braves, please.
The top three free agents are the really important ones. The Mets desperately need high-end starters to join the rotation with Max Scherzer and they really need Brandon Nimmo back.
They seem to believe that outside of Nimmo, the Mets will look outside for pitching help. Hopefully whoever they sign works out.
