The minor league season is winding down if not completely over at most levels. The Syracuse Mets wrap things up this weekend. One member of their roster took home a piece of hardware.

Brandon Sproat, predictably, earned Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors. In a season where many of the top prospects were sidelined or underperformed, who would be the choice for the position player? It ended up being the very unique Nick Morabito.

Sproat was a lock to win Pitcher of the Year early on. A 1.07 ERA in Brooklyn and the 2.45 posted in Binghamton landed him on everyone’s radar. Impressively, this was only his first professional season after getting drafted last summer.

Finishing off the year with 7 starts in Syracuse, Sproat finally saw some adversity. A 1-2 record and 7.53 ERA wasn’t in line with what he did in his previous two spots. Overall, he still managed to go 7-4 with a 3.40 ERA with 131 strikeouts in 116.1 innings of work. If there was anyone who could’ve contended for the honor, surprise riser Jonah Tong is it.

The selection of the position player wasn’t as predictable. Before the season began, you might’ve predicted Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert, or Luisangel Acuna. Instead, it went to Morabito who was taken in the second round back in 2022. Morabito gained some mild attention in 2023 by slashing .306/.421/.407 in his first 254 plate appearances. He kept up with it in 2024, slashing .312/.403/.398 in 528 chances at the plate.

Light on power, Morabito had only 17 doubles, 5 triples, and 4 home runs among his 142 total hits. What he lacks in going yardage he makes up for in stealing bases. He swiped 59 total including 48 with Brooklyn in High-A through 95 games.

Sproat is already a candidate to see some big league action as soon as next season. Morabito will be a guy who’ll get tested in Double-A. Players like him are rare these days. But if you hit .300 at any level and can run like him, the Mets will find some room in the future.
