Longtime Mets killer signed by upcoming opponent hopefully too late to matter

If there's a team he could still hit against, it's probably the Mets.

Chipper Jones could probably suit up for the Chicago White Sox, pitch for them, and still find a way to do damage against the New York Mets when they play later this month. Some Mets killers have a way of tormenting the Amazins. One who has done his fair share over the years just ended up in the lap of a different upcoming opponent.

When the Mets return to Citi Field, they’ll finally get a look at the powerhouse Baltimore Orioles. A young team that has grown into a legitimate World Series threat thanks to veteran additions and more reps for the kids, they made an out-of-left-field signing on Friday.

Jean Segura who hadn’t played professionally at all this year heads to the Orioles on what we’re all thankful for is a minor league contract. A week shouldn’t be enough time for the Orioles to call him up just in time to play the Mets but by golly if they see the stats he put up against the Metropolitans they might want to.

Mets killer Jean Segura is back in affiliated baseball but a little too late to do more damage

Multiple years in Philadelphia where he got the bulk of his heavy-lifting in against the Mets, Segura managed to slash .315/.360/.499 against us. It wasn’t just a bunch of singles either. His 12 home runs, 37 RBI, and 18 stolen bases are all above what he did against any other team.

Segura is well past his prime and it showed in his numbers against the Mets last season alone. He was only 2 for 11. Last year was spent with the Miami Marlins for 85 games in what was a complete career collapse. After hitting a respectable .277/.336/.387 the year prior for the Philadelphia Phillies, Segura saw the slash line totals drop to .219/.277/.279. He was traded to the Cleveland Guardians and released on the same day at the trade deadline in the Josh Bell swap.

If only this signing happened a few weeks ago we might have to worry about Segura. The Orioles already added J.D. Davis who has a personal vendetta against the Mets. James McCann can’t be too fond either although getting part of his paycheck paid by them and landing on an Orioles team where he has done a lot of winning shouldn’t have him whining much.

Whenever a Mets killer lands somewhere, it’s key to spot where that team is on the upcoming schedule. The Syracuse Mets are clear of the Norfolk Tides as well. Considering the Tides were a longtime affiliate of the Mets, we can safely assume Segura will probably break a longstanding franchise record held by a Mets prospect.
