Things have gone bad to worse for the New York Mets in 2024 and it's only May. After getting swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in their three-game series, New York dropped to a season worse 11 games under .500 at 22-33. Not only are they in fourth place in the National League East, but the Mets hold the third-worst record in the MLB sitting in front of the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins.
Things have just continued to go south for a Mets team that is looking more and more likely to be sellers at the trading deadline and finish with one of the worst records in baseball. And if there was one player who summed up the Mets season by his actions, it was this Mets relief pitcher whose action even cost him his spot on this squad.
Jorge Lopez tosses his glove into the stands perfectly sums up the Mets miserable season
In the Mets series finale against the Dodgers, relief pitcher Jorge Lopez was pitching for the Mets in a game that got away quickly in the last few innings of the game as the bullpen gave up seven runs. When Lopez was pitching in the top of the eighth inning and fresh off giving up a two-run home run to Shohei Ohtani, Lopez argued with the third base umpire on a check swing that he thought should have been called for a strike. The umpire did not want to hear anything from Lopez and he tossed him right out of the game with two outs in the inning.
Adding insult to injury, when Lopez was walking off the field in frustration after his ejection, he launched his glove into the stands with the remaining Mets fans on hand watching their team unraveling from their very eyes.
Those actions by Lopez resulted in the Mets cutting ties with the relief pitcher as New York designated him for assignment as his tenure in New York is now over. It really should come as no surprise that the Mets decided to give Lopez the boot after not apologizing for throwing his glove during his post-game interview and instead doubling down on his actions and even calling the Mets "the worst team in the MLB."
That glove toss by Lopez should come as no surprise for Mets and Lopez perfectly summed up the Mets' miserable season with that simple action. New York has lost 10 out of their last 12 games and has only won one series in May. Though Lopez's actions may have seemed to be out of line by major league player standards, that action was still the perfect way to sum up a lost season for the 2024 New York Mets.
