Disgraceful Marlins won’t be much help to the Mets against the Braves this weekend

The Mets shouldn't expect any help from the Marlins against the Braves this weekend.

And we thought the New York Mets scoring 10 runs in 3 straight days was impressive. How about the Los Angeles Dodgers? In a Miami bloodbath that if it was in the film Scarface would’ve pushed the rating to NC-17, the Dodgers scored 20 times against the Marlins on Thursday.

Unfortunately, this down-and-out Marlins ball club has to do business with the Atlanta Braves this weekend. Atlanta travels to Miami for three in what should be a weekend where little is done to help the Mets in the NL Wild Card standings.

By design, the Marlins have become one of the worst teams in baseball again just as the Mets need their help

Unbelievably, the Marlins were in the postseason last year. It was a quick two-game appearance. It’s more than the 2023 Mets were able to accomplish.

At the first sign of trouble, this is a franchise that tends to bail. Their offseason effort is rarely a strong one. Even in the past when they’ve won championships, the joke has been about where they’ll sell their players off to the next year. As pathetic as the Oakland Athletics are, no one has been more consistently a mess in the last two decades than the team the Mets will ask a favor from this weekend.

Often credited as a good pitching, weak hitting team, this hasn’t been the case in September. Those 20 runs scored against them didn’t help this reputation. Every single time the Dodgers crossed the plate the run was earned. They now hold the second-highest ERA in September by a single point better than the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Marlins are at 5.78 while tied with four other teams who all have 11 losses. They are now 3 away from reaching 100. It’ll be the fourth time in franchise history. The Mets have accomplished the century mark six total times despite being around far longer than the Marlins. Their last trip there was 1993 when New York laughably lost 103 versus the expansion Marlins who settled for 98.

Is it too much to ask for the Marlins for one win over the Braves this weekend? There is only so much the Mets can do all by themselves. Sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies is a tall task and for a little more breathing room, we may need one of the worst teams in the league to do the unthinkable and actually win a couple of important ball games.
