Why the Mets benching Eduardo Escobar against righties is actually frustrating

Eduardo Escobar had an up and down first season with the New York Mets. He swung the bat well in April, went in a four month slump, and then was one of the best hitters in baseball in September. Escobar's big finish to the season and his track record helped him begin the 2023 season as the everyday third baseman. He started in this role, but appears to have lost his grasp already.

The Mets have played seven games and are now 3-4 after being swept in Milwaukee. Escobar has just two hits in 20 at-bats, and didn't start in two of the three games against the Brewers - both of which came against right-handers.

NY Mets could have platooned Eduardo Escobar with Brett Baty from the start

It's been seven games, and Eduardo Escobar appears to be a platoon bat. This isn't much of a surprise as his numbers against righties in 2022 were poor, and he didn't look good at all this Spring. He's hitless in nine at-bats against righties this season, and appears to have been replaced by Luis Guillorme. I love Guillorme, but don't need to see him start games a majority of the time, especially with how questionable this offense is.

The Mets made a controversial decision that virtually no fan agreed with, sending Brett Baty down in order to play Escobar every day at third. The Mets could've just platooned their top third base prospect with Escobar, a guy who swung the bat well against southpaws last season.

If the Mets were willing to use Escobar in a platoon role SEVEN games into the season, why didn't Baty just start the year with the team? Guillorme is an awesome utility infielder who should not be playing every day.

Unfortunately the Mets can't remedy this mistake yet as Baty is down with injury right now, but once he's healthy, assuming Escobar is still in this platoon role, there is no reason to not call him up.

2 MLB teams the Mets should fear, 1 team that is a fraud. dark. Next
