The bare minimum for the 2024 NY Mets season to be a success

It's the least they can do to consider this year successful.

Making the playoffs has some value. Teams usually need some sort of playoff experience in order to become champions. The New York Mets aren’t in any major drought. If they’re able to get to the playoffs again in 2024, it’ll only be separated by one season when they got there in 2022.

The end result in 2022 wasn’t an acceptable one. A quick wash out with one win and two losses against the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card round, just making an appearance looked like a step in the right direction but shouldn’t be viewed as a success. After all, the team didn’t go back the following year making any momentum pointless.

This year, in a season when expectations weren’t nearly as high, one could argue that making it to the playoffs means the team has overachieved. However, it’s not good enough to consider this year successful.

The Mets need to at least win a playoff series in order to make the 2024 season a success

The difference between making the playoffs and not is major for the Mets. Falling short after fighting back isn’t any sort of hollow victory. There is little to celebrate being the best team to not play in October. It’s a step above participation trophy level.

Earning a playoff spot and then not winning a series feels a little better, but carries the added gut punch of tearing away a smile. For the Mets to come back from the dead only to make it to the playoffs and exit after one series would be the cruelest way to end things.

The Mets have achieved more than many predicted. By simply being in the playoff picture this late, they’ve done more than last year.

Expectations have changed. They are no longer a cute little engine that could. They need to be a Snowpiercer capable of ramming through the opponents in these final days.

Some will credit the Mets with making the playoffs even if it ends quickly in two or three games. We’ve been there before. Twice in a row during playoff visits in their most recent trips there. Be different from someone who makes a playoff cameo. Win a series.
