Mets vs. Braves prediction and odds for Wednesday, June 7 (Back Scherzer as underdogs)
While Max Scherzer got off to a slow start in 2023, he has been in fantastic form of late.
The New York Mets are going to need Scherzer at his best against the first place Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, but the team gets to face struggling right hander Charlie Morton in hopes of getting back in the win column after losing to the Braves on Tuesday in the series opener.
Can Scherzer keep it rolling? Let's dive into the odds and dish out a best bet for Wednesday's NL East showdown:
Mets vs. Braves odds, run line and total
Mets vs. Braves prediction and pick
Scherzer has been rolling, allowing only three earned runs across his last four starts, pitching at least five innings in each. After it looked like his velocity was sapped this season, he has punched out 17 batters in his past two starts, which is going to be needed against a Braves team that is hitting .300 on balls in play this year.
I believe Scherzer is beck on his All-Star trajectory after a slow start, but the same can't be said for Morton, who is ripe for a step back as the season progresses. Morton is walking nearly four batters per nine innings this season, but has stranded more than 77% of batters on base.
The Mets should put the pressure on Morton from the start with the team's near-top 10 walk rate and top five striekout percentage. With the Mets discipline at the plate, I expect Morton to struggle, he has pitched far beyond his means this season (his 3.62 ERA is supported by a 4.33 xERA).
I like Scherzer and the Mets as slight underdogs against the overrated Morton.
