Justin Verlander next team odds: Texas Rangers favorite to land Mets ace in a trade

The New York Mets have already begun selling ahead of the trade deadline, moving closer David Robertson in a deal with the Miami Marlins. 

Is it possible that more deals are coming? 

New York has some solid veteran pieces that it could trade to shed salary and improve the depth of its farm system, including starters Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. 

After a slow start to the 2023 season, Verlander has completely flipped the script as of late, lowering his ERA to 3.24 on the season. The three-time Cy Young award winner has a 1.69 ERA in the month of July, peaking at the right time before the deadline.

Why Texas Rangers make sense for Justin Verlander 

After losing Jacob deGrom to Tommy John surgery this season, the Rangers could use another top-line starter to allow them to make a playoff push in the 2023 season. 

Texas has one of the best offenses in Major League Baseball, but adding a pitcher like Verlander would likely increase the team’s odds to win the World Series. 

New York would obviously need to find a return worthwhile for moving Verlander, but Texas has plenty of reasons to improve in a wide open American League. Verlander could be an option to replace deGrom not only this season, but in 2024 as well.

Could Houston bring back Verlander? It would make sense given all the injuries the team has had to Lance McCullers, Luis Garcia and Jose Urquidy.

The San Francisco Giants could use Verlander to help them make a playoff push, as they are currently in the hunt in the wild card. 

Baltimore Orioles

The O’s are atop of the American League, but they do miss a top-line arm in their rotation. Verlander is a veteran who has been there before and would give the Orioles some stability in the playoffs. 

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are always a contender to pick someone up, and they have been in trouble since they’ve lost Dustin May, Walker Buehler and others to injury.
